To log in to Discord with a QR code, open the Discord mobile app, tap your profile picture, tap the cogwheel, choose Scan QR Code under Account Settings, scan the code on your computer, then tap Log in. Only ever approve a code you generated yourself.
QR login is one of the handiest things Discord does: you scan with the Discord mobile app and you're in on a new computer without typing your password. It's also a favourite trick of account thieves. I checked Discord's own QR login FAQ as of Nov 2026, and I'm putting the safety rules first, because that's the order they matter in.
Read this before you scan anything
Discord's QR code login FAQ is blunt about the risk, and these are its rules in plain English:
- If a stranger asks you to log in with a QR code, assume it's phishing. Discord says they may be trying to phish your account.
- Never approve a QR login you didn't generate yourself. If someone sent you a code and it opened the login screen, hit Cancel right away.
- Nothing happens until you approve. Every QR login attempt needs your approval before it goes through. Scanning by mistake isn't the disaster; tapping Log in is.
My view: this is the one rule worth drilling into any teenager who uses Discord. Nobody legitimate needs you to scan their code. If you'd like the wider picture, I've covered whether Discord is safe separately.
The six steps to log in with a QR code
First, download the Discord mobile app and log in with your account details. Then, with the QR code showing on your computer, in the desktop app or the browser:
- Tap your user profile image in the bottom right corner of the Discord mobile app.
- Tap the cogwheel to open your User Settings.
- Scroll down to Scan QR Code under Account Settings.
- Your camera opens. Scan the QR code shown in the Discord app or the browser.
- Approve by tapping Log in, or tap Cancel to stop it.
- You should now be logged in on the desktop app or browser.
Discord also says you can scan with any app that supports QR scanning, including the Camera app on many devices. You'll get a shortcut into the Discord app for the final scan and approval.
Why use QR login at all?
Discord pitches it as a way to connect quickly without typing out your full password, or sharing your password on an unfamiliar setup. That second part is the real benefit. On a work laptop, a friend's PC or a library computer, you never type your password into a machine you don't trust. Your phone does the approving instead.
The trade-off is that your phone becomes the key. Whoever holds your logged-in phone can approve a login, and anyone who tricks you into approving one gets in. That's why the safety rules above come first.
Why your code keeps expiring
QR codes only last 2 minutes. If yours runs out, refresh to get a new one. That short window is a safety feature, so don't treat it as a fault.
What the approval screen is for
The verification screen on your phone is where you're in charge. Discord says you have full control over which devices are allowed to log in from that screen. Even if you've scanned a QR code that opened the Discord app by mistake, you can stop the login attempt right there by tapping Cancel.
So read it every time. If you didn't just start a login on a computer you're sitting at, the answer is Cancel.

Approved a login by mistake? Do this
Don't panic, but act fast. Discord's fix is to change your Discord password, which logs out all devices at once, including any you didn't approve yourself.
Discord's QR page stops there. It doesn't give further recovery steps, so if you think someone has already got in and changed things, go to my guide on what to do when your Discord account has been hacked. And once you're back in control, I'd strongly suggest you turn on two-factor authentication.
Logging out of the computer afterwards
Using a shared or borrowed computer? When you're finished, go to User Settings, then Log Out, on the desktop or browser client. Discord says you'll stay logged out until your next session.
What the FAQ doesn't cover
Discord's page doesn't explain what to do if the Scan QR Code option is missing, if the camera won't open, or if the code won't scan. It doesn't give a cause for any of those either, so I won't make one up. If QR login won't work at all, log in the usual way with your email and password, and check whether Discord itself is having problems before you start changing settings.
Quick answers
How long does a Discord QR code last?
QR codes are only available for 2 minutes. If yours expires, refresh to get a new one.
Can I scan a Discord QR code with my phone's camera app?
Yes. Discord says any app that supports QR scanning works, including the Camera app on many devices, and you'll get a shortcut to the Discord app to approve.
What if I approve a QR login by mistake?
Change your Discord password. That logs out all devices at once, including ones you didn't approve.
Is it safe if someone sends me a Discord QR code?
No. Discord says a stranger asking you to log in with a QR code may be trying to phish your account, so hit Cancel.
