How to Get Verified on Telegram: The @VerifyBot Rules

Telegram only verifies official channels, public groups and bots, not personal accounts. To qualify you generally need notable verified accounts on at least 2 other big platforms that link to your Telegram chat, plus at least 2 press articles about you, and you apply through @VerifyBot.

Telegram's verification page is unusually specific about what it wants. If you've got the right accounts and links in place before you start, the process is straightforward. If you haven't, no amount of messaging the bot will help. Here's the checklist, taken from Telegram's own rules.

Who can be verified

Telegram verifies well-known people and organisations so people can spot official sources. The important limit: Telegram says it doesn't verify user accounts at the moment. Verification is only available for large and active official channels, groups and bots. So if you want a tick, you need an official channel, public group or bot to put it on.

The two requirements

RequirementWhat Telegram asks forFallback if you're short
Verified accounts elsewhereNotable verified accounts on at least 2 of: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, VK, SnapchatAn undisputed Wikipedia page that links to your Telegram chat counts as 1; organisations can use their official website
Press coverageAt least 2 links to press articles mentioning youThe same Wikipedia page can count as 1 missing press link

Telegram prefers articles from well-known, long-standing publishers and written in English. The articles must mention you or your organisation, but they don't need to link to Telegram.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Make sure your Telegram channel, group or bot is active and official.
  2. Add a link to it in the bio of your verified accounts on two of the listed platforms, so Telegram can confirm they belong to you.
  3. Gather at least 2 press article links that mention you.
  4. Open @VerifyBot in Telegram and follow its steps. It will offer to take extra data and comments after checking your social links.

Things to know before you apply

  • Your name gets locked. A verified channel, group or bot can't change its name or short link. To change either, send /unverify to @VerifyBot, make the change, then reapply.
  • It doesn't add features. Telegram says verification gives no extra abilities. It's simply one way to show a chat is official.
  • It's not an endorsement. The badge means the chat is official, not that Telegram agrees with its content.
  • The process is the same for everyone. Telegram says the requirements are identical for all applicants.

Common reasons applications stall

  • The links only go one way. Telegram needs the bio on your other verified accounts to link to the Telegram chat, so it can confirm they belong to you.
  • The verified accounts aren't on the list. Telegram names TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, VK and Snapchat; a verified account somewhere else doesn't count towards the two.
  • The press links don't mention you. Articles must mention the person or organisation by name.
  • You're trying to verify a personal account. Telegram doesn't do that at the moment.

The other icons you might see

Telegram now lets approved third-party services add their own verification icons to accounts and chats, to help prevent scams and misinformation. These run through official bots that Telegram itself has verified, and they're separate from Telegram's own checkmark. So a different icon next to a name means a third party has vouched for it, not Telegram.

My verdict

If you don't yet have two verified accounts elsewhere and some press coverage, put your effort there first; Telegram is checking your reputation off the platform, not on it. And as Telegram says itself, a link to your channel from your official website does a similar job in the meantime. While you're setting up your channel, it's worth knowing how to block someone on Telegram and how to report someone on Telegram for when the spammers arrive.
