How to Get Free Amazon Gift Cards: What's Real and What's a Scam

Most "free Amazon gift card" offers you see online are scams after your details, but there are legitimate ways to earn Amazon credit. The most direct is Amazon's own Shopper Panel, an invitation-only program that pays Amazon Balance, up to 10 dollars a month for receipts plus extra for surveys, for sharing receipts from other shops and answering short questions.

There are a lot of promises about free Amazon gift cards, and very few deliver anything except spam. So here's the honest picture: the one route Amazon runs itself, how much it realistically pays, and the gift card scams the FTC warns about that cost people far more than they ever win.

Legit vs scam at a glance

OfferVerdict
Amazon Shopper Panel (invitation from Amazon)Legit; pays Amazon Balance or a donation
'You've won a gift card, just pay a small fee'Scam, per the FTC
A caller asking you to pay a bill with gift cardsScam; no real business or agency asks that
A site asking for your Amazon login to 'add credit'Scam
Gift cards from friends or familyReal, and Amazon takes them at checkout

Amazon Shopper Panel: Amazon's own reward program

The Shopper Panel is opt-in and invitation-only. Amazon says it's open to a limited number of customers aged 18 or over in the US, the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and Japan. If you're invited, you sign in to the app with the same email as your Amazon account.

How you earnWhat Amazon says
Uploading receipts from other shopsUp to a 10 dollar reward each month, varying by retailer type
Answering short surveysRewards shown before you choose to take each survey
Offers (beta)Extra rewards for receipts with featured brands, space limited

Each month you choose one reward type: Amazon Balance, which is added to your account and used automatically at checkout, or a donation to one of Amazon's listed charities, which Amazon says passes on 100% of your reward.

When Shopper Panel rewards arrive

Rewards are issued once a month, within the first 48 hours of the following month. Amazon's example is that January rewards arrive by February 2nd. You can change your reward type until 11:59 PM Pacific on the last day of the month.

The catch with the Shopper Panel

It's real, but it's small and it isn't open to everyone. You need an invitation, receipts from Amazon itself don't count, and the receipt rewards top out at 10 dollars a month. There's also a condition that surprises people: if you switch on the ad verification part and then disable it for more than a cumulative 48 hours in a month, you lose that month's reward. Read the settings before you agree.

The gift card scams to avoid

The FTC is blunt: only scammers will tell you to buy a gift card and give them the numbers off the back. No real business or government agency asks you to pay with a gift card. Once they have the card number and PIN, they can take the money even if you still hold the card.

  • Callers claiming to be the IRS, Social Security or even the FTC, demanding payment
  • Tech support calls saying your computer has a problem
  • A 'family member' with an emergency, sometimes using a cloned voice
  • Prize notices that need a fee paid in gift cards
  • Utility companies threatening to cut you off today
  • Online romances that end in a request for gift cards
  • A check for more than you expected, with the difference to be sent back on a gift card

If you've been caught by a gift card scam

  1. Contact the gift card company straight away, however long ago it happened.
  2. Ask for your money back; the FTC says some companies are helping and may refund you.
  3. Keep the card and the store receipt.
  4. Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

How to tell a real Amazon offer from a fake

  1. Real Amazon programs live in your Amazon account or an official Amazon app, not on a random website.
  2. Amazon won't ask you to pay a fee to receive a reward.
  3. Nobody legitimate asks for your Amazon password or a one-time code to 'add credit'.
  4. If an email offers a gift card, go to Amazon directly instead of clicking the link.
  5. Urgency is a red flag: 'claim in the next ten minutes' is a pressure tactic, not a perk.

The FTC makes the same point about urgency in gift card scams: scammers say it's urgent so you don't stop to think or talk to someone you trust. Slowing down is the best defence.

Using Amazon credit you do get

Amazon.com Gift Cards and Amazon Balance are accepted at checkout, and Amazon lets you split a payment between one card and a gift card. That makes small balances from the Shopper Panel easy to use up on a normal order.

My verdict

Free Amazon gift cards come slowly and in small amounts from programs Amazon runs or vets, never from strangers with urgent offers. If you're invited to the Shopper Panel, it's a painless extra.
