The short version: you can't get a free email domain on its own, but once you own a domain you can get free email on it through forwarding. Cloudflare Email Routing, ImprovMX and Forward Email all forward mail sent to your domain address into an inbox you already use. Sending from that address is where the paid plans start, and Google Workspace offers a trial only.
A hello@yourbusiness address looks far more established than a string of numbers at a free webmail provider, and it's one of the cheapest upgrades a small business can make. I'd still say it's worth getting right from day one, because changing your email address later means updating every invoice, profile and signature you've ever sent. Here's how the free route works, and where it stops.
Free ways to get email on your own domain
In no particular order:
- Cloudflare Email Routing: best if your domain already runs through Cloudflare, with routing on Free and Paid plans.
- ImprovMX: best for a simple free forwarding plan covering 1 domain and 25 aliases.
- Forward Email: best for free forwarding and aliases for custom domains.
- Google Workspace: best when you need a full business mailbox and are ready to pay after the trial.
Domain email options compared

| Forward Email | Forwarding and aliases | Yes |
| Google Workspace | A full business mailbox | Trial only |
| ImprovMX | Simple free forwarding | Yes |
Pages and plans change, so check the vendor's own page before you rely on a limit.
The catch: free domain email is forwarding, not a mailbox
This is the bit most guides skip. The free options don't give you a new inbox. They take mail sent to you@yourdomain and pass it on to an inbox you already have, such as your personal Gmail or Outlook. That's often all a small business needs to start with, but you should know what you're signing up for.
Replying from your domain address is where it changes. ImprovMX's free plan grants most forwarding features, and its pricing page says to upgrade to paid for sending emails and higher limits. Cloudflare's documentation says routing supports Workers Free and Paid plans, and sending to verified destination addresses in your own account is free, but sending to any other recipient needs Workers Paid. Google Workspace gives you a full mailbox, but its pricing page offers a free trial, not a free plan. And with every option here, you still need to own the domain name first.
Setting up free domain email, step by step
- Buy your domain name from a registrar, if you don't own one yet.
- Pick a forwarding service. Use Cloudflare Email Routing if your domain is already on Cloudflare, or ImprovMX or Forward Email if it isn't.
- Add the forwarding service's MX records at your domain's DNS settings. Forward Email says once you add its MX records, every address on your domain is yours.
- Create the addresses you want, such as hello, invoices and support, and point each one at your existing inbox.
- Send a test email from a different account to each address and check it lands.
- Decide whether you also need to send from the domain, and if so, move to a paid sending plan or a full mailbox.
Don't skip the test in step five. Forwarding problems are almost always a DNS record typed wrongly or not saved, and you'd rather find that out from your own test email than from a customer who says they wrote to you last week and heard nothing back.
How many addresses you get for free
ImprovMX is the clearest on numbers. Its free plan includes 1 domain, 25 aliases and 500 emails forwarded per day, and the company says it's keeping the free plan forever. For most small businesses, 25 aliases is far more than you'll use. I'd set up a handful at most, so you're not checking ten addresses that all land in the same place.
A tidy setup looks something like this: one address for general enquiries, one for invoices and receipts, and one for each person who deals with customers. Because every alias forwards into an inbox you already use, you can filter each one into its own folder and see at a glance what's come in where. If you want help with that side, my guide on setting up email forwarding in Outlook shows the inbox end.
Where to buy the domain itself
Because the forwarding is free but the domain isn't, your registrar matters more than your email service at this stage. Look for one that makes it easy to edit DNS records, since that's where you'll add the MX records. I've compared the options in my roundup of the best domain registrars, and if you'd rather a paid service handles your mail end to end, my guide to the best mail forwarding services covers that route.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If setting up domains, inboxes and the admin around them keeps landing on your desk, that's exactly the kind of work that can be automated. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a free email domain?
Not the domain itself, which you need to own first. Once you have it, Cloudflare Email Routing, ImprovMX and Forward Email can forward mail sent to your domain address for free.
Can I send email from my own domain for free?
Not on most free plans. ImprovMX says to upgrade to paid for sending emails, and Cloudflare says sending to arbitrary recipients requires Workers Paid.
What is the difference between email forwarding and a mailbox?
Forwarding passes mail sent to your domain address on to an inbox you already have. A mailbox, such as Google Workspace, stores and sends mail on the domain itself.
Do I need to buy a domain name first?
Yes. Every free option here works on a domain you already own, by adding the service's MX records to your DNS.
Is Google Workspace free?
No. Google Workspace's pricing page offers a free trial, then paid plans.
How many free addresses does ImprovMX give you?
ImprovMX's free plan includes 1 domain and 25 aliases, with 500 emails forwarded per day.
