How to Delete a Sheet in Excel (and When to Hide It Instead)

To delete a sheet in Excel, right-click its tab at the bottom of the workbook and select Delete, or go to Home, Delete, Delete Sheet. Check first that no other sheet pulls data from it, and save a backup, because a deleted sheet's contents are gone from the workbook.

Workbooks collect clutter. A "Sheet2" nobody used, a rough draft tab, last quarter's copy of the order log. Deleting the sheets you don't need makes a file easier to find your way around, and less confusing for anyone you share it with.

Removing a sheet takes two clicks. The thinking happens before you click: is anything else in the workbook relying on that sheet, and would hiding it be the smarter move? I'll cover both, plus how to delete several tabs at once without taking out the wrong ones.

Deleting a sheet in Excel from its tab

Microsoft's quickest method:

  1. Find the sheet's tab along the bottom of the workbook.
  2. Right-click the tab.
  3. Select Delete.
  4. If Excel asks you to confirm, select Delete again.

The tab disappears and Excel moves you to a neighbouring sheet.

Deleting a worksheet from the Excel Home tab

If you prefer the ribbon, Microsoft gives this alternative:

  1. Click the tab of the sheet you want to remove, so it's the active sheet.
  2. Go to the Home tab.
  3. Select the Delete drop-down in the Cells group.
  4. Select Delete Sheet.

Be careful to choose Delete Sheet, not Delete Cells or Delete Sheet Rows, which sit in the same menu and only remove part of the sheet.

Before you delete a sheet in Excel: three checks

Deleting a tab with data on it isn't something I'd do casually. Run through these first:

  • Is anything linked to it? Totals, lookups or charts on other sheets may pull numbers from this one. If the sheet vanishes, those formulas can show #REF! errors.
  • Is it really empty? Press Ctrl + End on the sheet to jump to the last used cell. If it lands far from A1, there's something there.
  • Do you have a copy? Save a version of the file first, or duplicate the sheet into a backup workbook.

I treat deleting a sheet as permanent and keep a backup before I do it. My walkthrough on copying a sheet in Excel shows how to stash a duplicate in a separate file in seconds.

Deleting several Excel sheets at once

You can remove multiple tabs in one go by selecting them together first. Microsoft's help explains how:

  1. Click the first tab you want to delete.
  2. Hold Ctrl (Command on a Mac) and click each other tab you want gone. To pick a run of neighbouring tabs, hold Shift and click the last one.
  3. Check the title bar: Microsoft says Group appears there when several sheets are selected.
  4. Right-click one of the selected tabs and select Delete.

Ungroup straight after

Grouped sheets are risky. Microsoft warns that anything you type while sheets are grouped appears on all of them, and that grouped sheets stay grouped even after you save, close and reopen. If you change your mind about deleting, click any tab that isn't selected, or right-click a selected tab and choose Ungroup Sheets.

Hiding an Excel sheet instead of deleting it

If a sheet holds lookup lists, workings or old data that other sheets still use, hiding is usually better than deleting. Microsoft says hidden sheets are out of view, but their data can still be referenced by other sheets and workbooks.

  1. Right-click the tab.
  2. Select Hide.

To bring it back, right-click any visible tab, choose Unhide, pick the sheet in the list and select OK. You'll also find Hide Sheet and Unhide Sheet under Home, Format, Visibility, Hide & Unhide.

OptionWhat you see afterwardsCan formulas still use the data?
DeleteThe tab is goneNo, links can break
HideThe tab disappears from viewYes, and Unhide brings it back
Rename and move to the endA clearly labelled tab out of the wayYes, nothing changes

Deleting a sheet in Excel for the web and Mac

The right-click route works in the browser version and on a Mac too: right-click the tab and look for Delete. Shared workbooks need extra care, because deleting a tab removes it for everyone who works in the file, not just for you. If colleagues use the workbook, I'd mention it in a comment or a quick message before removing anything they might rely on.

When you can't find or can't delete an Excel sheet

  • Delete is greyed out: the workbook structure may be protected. Remove the protection from the Review tab if it's your file, or ask the owner.
  • It's the only sheet: a workbook needs at least one visible sheet, so add a new one with the plus icon first, then delete the old one.
  • A sheet you expected isn't in the Unhide list: Microsoft says sheets hidden by VBA code, set as very hidden, don't show in the Unhide dialog. Ask whoever built the workbook.
  • No tabs at all: the tabs may be hidden by a display setting or a squeezed scroll bar. Widen the window and check Excel's options for showing sheet tabs.

Hiding isn't a security feature, though. Anyone with the file can unhide a sheet in seconds, so if a tab holds something a client shouldn't see, delete it from the copy you send them rather than hiding it.

Tidying workbooks for clients and teams

If you hand spreadsheets to clients or a virtual assistant, a tidy file saves questions. I delete scratch tabs, hide the reference lists people don't need to see, and rename what's left with clear names like "Orders" and "Summary". Microsoft notes you can rename a tab by double-clicking its name. If something goes wrong mid-tidy and Excel closes on you, my guide to recovering an unsaved workbook is the place to start.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delete a sheet in Excel?

Right-click the sheet's tab at the bottom of the workbook and select Delete. Or select the sheet and go to Home, Delete, Delete Sheet.

Can I delete multiple sheets in Excel at once?

Yes. Hold Ctrl (Command on a Mac) and click each tab, or hold Shift to select a run of tabs, then right-click one and choose Delete.

Should I hide or delete an Excel sheet?

Hide it if other sheets use its data. Microsoft says hidden sheets can still be referenced by other sheets and workbooks, while a deleted sheet's data is gone.

Why can't I delete a sheet in Excel?

The workbook structure may be protected, or it may be the last visible sheet. Add another sheet or remove the protection, then try again.

Why is a hidden sheet missing from the Unhide list?

Microsoft says sheets hidden by VBA code with the very hidden setting don't appear in the Unhide dialog. Contact the workbook's owner.
