How to Connect AirPods to Mac (and Stop Them Jumping)

To connect AirPods to a Mac, click Control Centre in the menu bar, click Sound and choose your AirPods. If they're not listed, open System Settings, Bluetooth, put the AirPods in their open case, hold the setup button (or double-tap the front on newer models) and click Connect.

If your AirPods already work with your iPhone, they're probably already set up on your Mac too, waiting to be picked from a menu. Apple links them through your Apple Account. When that doesn't happen, pairing by hand takes under a minute. The trickier problems are sound still coming out of the Mac's speakers and AirPods jumping between devices. Here's how to handle all of it.

The quick way: Control Centre

  1. Put your AirPods in your ears.
  2. Click Control Centre in the menu bar (the two switches icon).
  3. Click Sound.
  4. Choose your AirPods from the list.

This works when your Mac and iPhone are signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple sets the AirPods up on all your devices once they're paired with the iPhone, so there's nothing else to do.

Pair AirPods with a Mac manually

  1. Open the Apple menu, System Settings, then Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Put both AirPods in the charging case and open the lid.
  3. On AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 or AirPods 5, double-tap the front of the case until the light flashes white. On other models, press and hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes white.
  4. Your AirPods appear under Nearby Devices. Click Connect.

Check your macOS is new enough

Newer AirPods need a newer Mac system. Apple's minimums include:

AirPods modelNeeds at least
AirPods 2macOS Mojave 10.14.4
AirPods 3macOS Monterey
AirPods 4macOS Sequoia

If your Mac is older than that, the AirPods may still connect as basic Bluetooth headphones but miss features, or refuse to pair. Check your version in the Apple menu, About This Mac.

Sound still coming from the Mac speakers?

The AirPods are connected but the Mac hasn't switched to them. Click Control Centre, Sound, and choose the AirPods as the output. In video call apps such as Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, check the app's own audio settings too, because they can keep using the speakers or the built-in microphone even after macOS has switched.

Stop AirPods jumping between Mac and iPhone

Automatic switching moves your AirPods to whichever Apple device is playing sound. Apple supports it for AirPods 2 and later and AirPods Pro, on macOS Big Sur or later, with both devices on the same Apple Account. It's handy when you take a call on your iPhone while music plays on the Mac. It's annoying when a notification on the iPad steals them mid-meeting.

To stop it for the Mac, connect the AirPods, open System Settings, click your AirPods' name in the sidebar, and set Connect to This Mac to When Last Connected to This Mac instead of Automatically.

Won't connect at all?

  • Charge the case for a while.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and on in System Settings.
  • Remove the AirPods from the Mac's Bluetooth list and pair again.
  • Reset them: case closed for 30 seconds, forget them on your devices, then hold the setup button for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white.

Use AirPods for calls on a Mac

AirPods make a decent headset for video calls. For the best sound in meetings, choose the AirPods as both microphone and speaker in the call app, and keep the Mac within easy range. If a music app misbehaves once the AirPods are connected, my fix for Spotify not working on a Mac usually sorts it. And if you want something more comfortable for long calls, my guide to noise cancelling headphones compares alternatives.

Rename AirPods so the right pair connects

In a busy office or family home, the Bluetooth list can show several AirPods with similar names. Click your AirPods' name in System Settings and change it to something obvious. The new name follows them across your Apple devices, so you'll recognise them on your iPhone and iPad too.

Check the battery from your Mac

With the AirPods connected, click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, or Control Centre, Bluetooth, and hover over the AirPods to see the charge in each earbud and the case. You can also add the Batteries widget to the Mac desktop or Notification Centre. It's worth a glance before a long call, because AirPods give little warning before they run flat.

Use AirPods with Mac and Windows

If you also have a Windows PC, the AirPods pair with it like any Bluetooth headset, though automatic switching won't work between the Mac and the PC. You'll connect them by hand on each.

Once they're set up, connecting is usually automatic: open the case near the Mac, put the AirPods in, and they appear as the output within a few seconds.

My verdict

Try Control Centre, Sound first; if you use one Apple Account, your AirPods are probably already there. If not, pair them in Bluetooth settings with the setup button or a double-tap. When sound stays on the speakers, set the output in Control Centre and in your call app.
