How to Clear Instagram Cache on Android, iPhone and Browser

On Android, clear the Instagram cache in your phone's Settings: Apps, then Instagram, then Storage (or Storage and cache), then Clear cache. iPhone has no clear cache button for apps, so the only full clear is to delete Instagram and reinstall it from the App Store, then log back in.

Clearing the cache on Android keeps you logged in and leaves your account untouched; it only throws away temporary files the app has stored on your phone. Your posts, messages, followers and drafts saved to your account aren't affected, because those live on Instagram's side, not in the cache.

The iPhone catch: Offload App often isn't enough. Apple's own support page says offloading frees up the storage the app uses but keeps its documents and data. That kept data is where a lot of the cached clutter sits, so offloading and reinstalling can leave things much as they were. Deleting the app removes the app and its related data, which is the clean slate you're after. You'll need your Instagram password to get back in, so check you know it first.

Clear the Instagram cache on Android

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps. On some phones it's called Apps and notifications or Application manager.
  3. Tap See all apps if you don't see Instagram straight away, then tap Instagram.
  4. Tap Storage, or Storage and cache.
  5. Tap Clear cache. Don't tap Clear storage unless you want to reset the app completely.
  6. Open Instagram again. The first load may be a bit slower while it fetches fresh files.

Menu names differ between Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi and other phones. If a menu name looks different on yours, open Settings and search for the word cache or the word Instagram. My wider guide to clearing the cache on Android covers the main phone brands.

Clear the Instagram cache on iPhone

Here's what you've got to work with on an iPhone, and which option does the job.

Option one: delete and reinstall (the full clear)

  1. Make sure you know your Instagram password, or that your email or phone number on the account is current.
  2. Press and hold the Instagram icon on your Home Screen.
  3. Tap Remove App, then Delete App, and confirm.
  4. Open the App Store, search for Instagram and download it again.
  5. Open it and log in.

Option two: offload (frees space, keeps data)

  1. Open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage.
  2. Tap Instagram in the list.
  3. Tap Offload App, then tap Reinstall App.

Offloading is handy when you're short on space and want to keep your login, but it won't wipe the cached data. If your problem is a stuck feed or old images, go straight to option one. For the rest of your phone, my guide on clearing the cache on iPhone shows how to tidy Safari and other apps too.

Clear Instagram's cache in a web browser

If you use Instagram on a computer or in your phone's browser, the cache lives in the browser, not in an app. Open your browser's settings, find the privacy or site data section, search for Instagram, and remove its stored data and cookies. That signs you out on that browser, so you'll log in again afterwards.

What each option clears, side by side

ActionWhat it removesDo you stay logged in?
Android: Clear cacheTemporary files onlyYes
Android: Clear storageAll app data on the phone, including settingsNo, you'll log in again
iPhone: Offload AppThe app itself; documents and data stayUsually yes
iPhone: Delete and reinstallThe app plus its data on the phoneNo, you'll log in again
Browser: clear site dataCookies and cached files for that siteNo, on that browser
Instagram: clear search historyYour recent searches onlyYes

When clearing the cache helps, and when it won't

Clearing the cache is worth a try when:

  • Your feed or Reels freeze, stutter or show the same posts over and over.
  • An old profile photo or old version of a post keeps showing after you've changed it.
  • Instagram is taking up far more space on your phone than it should.
  • The app crashes on opening after an update.

It won't help when:

  • Instagram itself is down. Everyone will see the same problem, and you'll have to wait.
  • Your account has been restricted or a post was removed. That's an account issue, not a phone issue.
  • Your internet connection is weak. Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data first.
  • A filter or effect is missing from the camera. That's usually down to the app version, your region, or the effect being removed, not the cache.

Three quicker checks before you clear anything

Clearing the cache is safe, but these take even less time and fix a fair share of the same problems:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Update the app. Open the App Store or Google Play, search for Instagram and tap Update if it's offered. Plenty of freezing and crashing gets fixed this way.
  2. Force the app closed. Swipe Instagram away from your recent apps and open it again, so it starts fresh.
  3. Restart your phone. It clears out anything stuck in memory and only takes a minute.

If the problem is still there after all three, then clear the cache as shown above. And if you're clearing it because Instagram is eating your storage, check how much space it's using first: on Android it's shown on the same Storage screen, and on iPhone it's under Settings, General, iPhone Storage. That tells you whether the cache is the real culprit or whether it's photos and videos saved elsewhere on the phone.

Search history is a different thing

Lots of people looking to clear the cache really want to wipe the accounts and words that pop up when they tap search. That's not stored in the cache, so clearing it won't touch them. Instagram has its own clear search history option inside the app's settings. Search the settings for the words search history and you'll find it. Instagram's help centre notes that cleared searches can come back if you search for them again.

Snapchat works differently again, with a cache button inside the app itself. If you use both, my guide to clearing the Snapchat cache covers that one.

What I'd do

On Android, clear the cache first; it's quick and you lose nothing. On iPhone, don't bother with offloading for a glitch. Check you know your password, delete the app, reinstall it, and log in fresh.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clear the Instagram cache on iPhone?

There's no cache button on iPhone. Delete the Instagram app, reinstall it from the App Store and log in again. Offloading keeps the app's documents and data, so it usually won't clear the cache.

Will clearing the Instagram cache delete my photos or messages?

No. Your posts, messages and followers are stored on Instagram's side. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files on your phone.

Does clearing the cache log me out of Instagram?

On Android, Clear cache keeps you logged in. Clear storage, deleting the app on iPhone, or clearing browser data will log you out.

Is clearing the cache the same as clearing search history?

No. Search history is cleared from inside Instagram's settings. Clearing the cache doesn't remove your recent searches.
