How to Change WhatsApp Group Picture (Android, iPhone, Computer)

A group picture is the first thing people see in their chat list, and a blank grey circle doesn't tell anyone what the group is for. Changing it takes less than a minute. WhatsApp calls it the group icon, and its help centre gives separate steps for Android, iPhone and the computer. I'll go through each one, then cover who is allowed to change it and what to do if the option isn't there.

Who can change the WhatsApp group picture

Before the steps, a quick check on permissions. WhatsApp's help centre says that by default, any group member can send messages or change the group name, icon and description. A group admin can change the group settings so that only admins can edit group info.

So if you can't change the picture, the likely reason is that an admin has restricted editing. The group admin can see and change this under Group permissions with the Edit group settings switch. When it's on, members can edit the name, icon and description. When it's off, only admins can.

Changing the WhatsApp group picture on Android

1. Tap Chats and open the group.
2. Tap the group name at the top. You can also tap and hold the group in your chat list, then tap Group info.
3. Tap the group icon to add a new one, or tap the group icon and then the edit button to change your current icon.
4. Choose Camera, Gallery, Emojis and sticker, or Search web to pick a new image. There's also a remove option if you want to take the picture off.
5. Tap Done, or the tick, when prompted.

Changing the WhatsApp group picture on iPhone

1. Tap Chats and open the group, then tap the group name.
2. Tap the edit button on the group info screen.
3. Tap the group icon.
4. Select Take photo, Choose photo, Emoji and stickers, Search web, Reset picture or Create AI image.
5. When you've picked your image, tap Done.

The help pages show some of the buttons on the iPhone group screen as icons rather than words, so the edit button may look like a small symbol. Menus vary by app version, but the group icon is always the thing to tap.

Changing the WhatsApp group picture on a computer

1. Click Chats, open the group chat, then click the group name.
2. Click the group icon.
3. Choose View photo, Take photo, Upload photo, Emoji and sticker, or Remove photo.
4. Click the tick to save.

The computer route is the easiest if your logo or photo is already saved on your laptop. Upload photo lets you pick the file from your computer straight away.

Using an AI image as your WhatsApp group picture

On both Android and iPhone, WhatsApp's help pages mention that you might have the option to generate an AI image for your group photo. WhatsApp adds some conditions: Meta AI and some experiences are only available in limited countries, and may not be available to you yet even if others in your country have access. It supports prompts in a set list of languages, which includes English, French, German, Hindi, Spanish and several others.

So if you don't see Create AI image on your phone, that's the likely reason. Everything else on this page works without it.

Setting a WhatsApp group picture when you create the group

You don't have to wait until the group exists. According to the help centre, when you create a group you can click or tap Add group icon, choose a photo from your device and confirm. You can do it at the same time as naming the group and choosing disappearing messages and permissions. If you plan to invite lots of people, setting the picture first makes the invite look more trustworthy to the people receiving it.

Removing or resetting the WhatsApp group picture

On Android the help pages list a remove option next to the icon choices. On iPhone it appears as Reset picture. On a computer you choose Remove photo. Each puts the group back to the default look. If you change your mind later, repeat the steps above to add a new one.

Choosing a good WhatsApp group picture

This is the part WhatsApp's help pages don't cover, so here's my own take. The picture shows as a small circle, so a busy photo turns to mush. For a business group, a clean logo or a simple coloured background with a short word works well. For a family group, a favourite photo does the job. Keep faces and important text towards the middle, because the circle crop trims the corners.

• Use a square image so nothing important gets cut off.
• Avoid tiny text. It won't be readable in the chat list.
• Pick an image you have the right to use, particularly for a group tied to your company.
• Don't use another person's photo without asking them.

What other members see when you change the WhatsApp group picture

WhatsApp's help pages describe the group icon as the image that's displayed next to the group in your chats list. They don't go into notification details for a change, so I won't promise exactly what members see. If you want everyone to know about a new look, say so in the group.

If you can't change the WhatsApp group picture

• Ask an admin whether Edit group settings has been limited to admins.
• Make sure you're still in the group. Only current members can edit it.
• Update WhatsApp to the latest version, then try again on a stable connection.
• Check the options on your device. The AI option only shows where Meta AI is available.
