To block game invites on Facebook, open Settings, click Blocking, scroll to Block app invites, click Edit and add the friend's name or email to the blocked list. Facebook's help centre says your friends won't be notified. You can also turn off game notifications under Apps and websites.
Nothing clears the mood like opening Facebook to find another request to join a game you've never played. If the same friend keeps sending them, it can feel awkward to say anything. The good news is that you don't have to. Facebook has a setting that stops invites from a named friend, and that friend isn't told.
There are really four levers here, from light to heavy: block invites from one person, turn off game and app notifications, remove a game you've already added, or switch off apps and games altogether. I'll go through each using Facebook's help centre, so you can pick the one that fits.
How to block game and app invites from one friend on Facebook
This is the most targeted fix. Facebook's help centre says it blocks all app invites from a specific friend, and that your friends won't be notified when you block app invites from them. Because it covers apps, game invites are included. On a computer, log into Facebook and then:
- Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
- Select Settings & privacy, then click Settings.
- Click Blocking in the left menu.
- Scroll down to Block app invites and click Edit on the right side.
- Click Add to blocked list.
- Enter the name or email of the friend you want to stop receiving app invites from.
The help centre writes these steps for a computer. It doesn't give a separate phone version for this setting, so if you're on your phone, I'd open Facebook in a browser rather than guess at menus that may not exist in the app.
Why blocking game invites is different from blocking a person
This setting is narrow on purpose. You're not unfriending anyone and you're not blocking their profile. You're stopping one kind of message from one person. They stay your friend and can still post and message as normal, and you'll still see their updates.
It's a gentle way to deal with the cousin who sends every new game to everyone. If the problem is wider than game invites, such as unwanted messages, that is a different setting, and I'd handle it as a separate decision.
How to turn off Facebook game and app notifications
Sometimes the issue isn't one friend but the number of alerts you get from games. The help centre has a switch for that. The steps are:
- Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
- Select Settings & privacy, then click Settings.
- Click Apps and websites in the left side menu.
- Scroll down to Preferences.
- Next to Game and app notifications, click Turn off.
You can click Turn on at the same place if you change your mind. Interestingly, the same help article recommends the blocking setting when a friend is sending too many app or game invites, so the two settings are meant to work together.
Removing a Facebook game you added by mistake
Maybe the invites keep coming because you tried a game once. If so, remove it. The help centre says:
- Click your profile picture, then Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Click Apps and websites in the left menu.
- Find the app or game and click Remove next to its name.
- If offered, you can allow Facebook to tell the app or game that your login connection was removed. They may offer you another way to log in.
- Click Remove again to confirm.
The help centre says that, once removed, the game should no longer post to your timeline. If you still see an old post, you can remove it. It adds that the app may have kept info from when you used it, but you can contact the developer and ask them to delete it.
Switching off Facebook apps and games completely
This is the heaviest option, so think before you use it. Facebook's help centre says turning off its integration with apps, games and websites removes the apps and games you've connected. Under Apps and websites, scroll to Preferences, then click Turn Off next to Apps, websites and games.
Be aware of the trade-off the help centre spells out. You won't be able to log into apps, games and websites with Facebook, or connect other accounts to Facebook. You may also lose information that can't be recovered, such as high scores, and posts by apps or games to your timeline may be removed. If you use Facebook login for work tools, don't do this casually.

Which Facebook setting should you choose for game invites
| Your situation | Best setting |
|---|---|
| One friend sends lots of game invites | Block app invites for that friend |
| Alerts from games are the problem | Turn off game and app notifications |
| You tried a game and regret it | Remove the app or game |
| You want no connected apps at all | Turn off apps, websites and games |
Most people only need the first or second one. I'd start there before touching anything that removes data.
A note on Facebook game invites for families and work profiles
These settings apply to your personal profile. If a child uses Facebook, set these up together, and check the apps and games listed under Apps and websites while you're there.
Another place to look is your friends list: if you've accepted people you don't know, the invites often follow. My guide to adding friends on Facebook explains how suggestions work, which helps you decide who to accept. And if you'd like to understand how apps use your device, read whether Facebook tracks your location.
If you can't find the Block app invites setting on Facebook
- Use a computer, because the help centre's steps are written for one.
- Look under Blocking in Settings, not under Privacy.
- Scroll down the Blocking page, because Block app invites sits below other options.
- Check the friend's name is spelled as it appears on their profile.
- Update your browser, then reload the page.
If the setting is still missing, report a problem from the Facebook help menu.
