To become a Secret Service special agent, you must be at least 21 when you apply and under 40 when you're referred, qualify for the GL-07, GL-09 or GS-11 grade, pass vision, hearing and fitness tests, and qualify for a Top Secret clearance. New agents train at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, then complete an 18-week Special Agent Training Course.
Special agents protect top US and visiting foreign officials and investigate financial crimes. It's a demanding job with some unusually specific entry rules. I've built this from the Secret Service's own qualifications, training, application and FAQ pages, read on 26 October 2026.
The core requirements
- Age: at least 21 at application and under 40 at referral, with exceptions for some people with prior federal law enforcement service.
- Driving: a current valid driver's licence.
- Vision: uncorrected no worse than 20/100 binocular, and correctable to 20/20 in each eye, plus a colour vision test.
- Hearing: no more than 25 decibels of hearing loss in either ear at the tested ranges.
- Fitness: excellent health and a pass on the Applicant Physical Abilities Test.
- Clearance: Top Secret, with a full background investigation, drug screening, credit check, medical exam and polygraph.
- Mobility: a signed agreement to accept assignments anywhere in the US and overseas.
- Selective Service: registration or exemption, for men born after 31 December 1959.
The rule that rules out a lot of people: visible tattoos
This is the requirement most guides leave out. The Secret Service says special agents must have no visible body markings, including tattoos, body art and branding, on the head, face, neck, hands and fingers, meaning any area below the wrist bone. The one exception is a single conservative ring tattoo, such as a wedding band, on one finger. If you have visible markings, you'll be required to have them medically removed before you can continue. If you're planning new ink and this career is on your list, think about placement first.
Eye surgery isn't a barrier. LASIK, PRK, ALK and RK are all acceptable, as long as you pass the vision tests after the waiting period: two months after LASIK, six months after PRK and one year after ALK or RK.
Do you need a degree?
Not necessarily. The Secret Service FAQ says the special agent role has no positive education requirement, meaning you can qualify through education, experience or a mix of both. Your qualifications decide your starting grade and pay.
| Grade | Starting salary | How you qualify (one of) |
|---|---|---|
| GL-07 | $49,508 | Bachelor's with superior academic achievement, a full year of graduate study, or 1 year of specialised experience |
| GL-09 | $55,214 | Master's or J.D., two years of graduate study, or 1 year of experience at GL-07 level |
| GS-11 | $64,009 | Ph.D. or equivalent, three years of graduate study, or 1 year of experience at GL-9 level |
Those starting salaries are as listed on the Secret Service qualifications page as of October 2026. Specialised experience means investigative, protective or law enforcement work that built the skills the role needs, such as conducting investigations into violations of US law and writing investigative reports.
How the application works
- Apply through USAJOBS. The Secret Service asks applicants to apply online to current vacancy announcements and follow each one's specific instructions.
- Complete the testing and fitness stages. These include the Applicant Physical Abilities Test.
- Go through the background investigation. The Secret Service says a full investigation typically takes about six to nine months, covering employment, police records, credit, school transcripts, neighbourhood references and military records.
- Accept a final offer. On average, you'll report for training about 2 to 4 weeks after the final offer.
- Serve your excepted appointment. New agents are appointed for 3 years and 120 days, then either converted to career status or separated.
During the background investigation, the Secret Service verifies a wide range of information, so make sure the dates and details on your application match your records exactly. Gaps and inconsistencies slow things down.
You can apply for special agent and Uniformed Division officer roles at the same time, which is worth doing if you'd be happy in either.
Training
New special agent trainees start with the Criminal Investigator Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. After that comes an 18-week Special Agent Training Course at the James J. Rowley Training Center outside Washington, DC, focused on the Secret Service's dual role of investigations and protection. Trainees are expected to arrive in good physical condition, ready to begin a fitness program. Firearm proficiency must be maintained throughout your career.

My verdict
You can become a Secret Service agent without a degree if you've got the right experience, but the physical, medical and appearance rules are strict, and the background check alone can take most of a year. It also helps to be realistic about the lifestyle: the mobility agreement means you could be posted anywhere in the US or overseas, so talk it through with your family before you apply. Apply early in your thirties at the latest so the age cap doesn't catch you mid-process. If you're comparing law enforcement careers, read how to become a detective, and if the legal side interests you, how to become a lawyer.
