How to Add or Remove Location on Twitter (X) Posts

Location on Twitter (X) posts is off by default: you only get it if you opt in to precise location, then tap the location icon while writing a post. To remove it, open the compose box, tap the location icon and tap X in the top left, and your location stays off future posts until you add it again.

This page is about location on individual posts. If you're looking for the country label on profiles, that's a different feature: here's how the account location label works. Everything below is from X's Help Center as of October 2026.

What a location on an X post can reveal

There are two layers, and the second is the one to understand. The first is the label you pick, such as a neighbourhood or city, which shows underneath the text of your post. X gives 'SoMa, San Francisco' as an example. In some places you can also tag a specific business, landmark or point of interest, sourced from Foursquare and Yelp.

The second is precise location: the GPS coordinates you posted from. X says that on X for iOS and X for Android, a post may include your precise location, which can be found through the X API, as well as the label you chose. X also notes your precise location may be more specific than the label.

Type of locationWho sees itWhen it's attached
Location label (city, neighbourhood)Shown under your postWhen you choose one from the location icon
Business or landmarkShown under your postIn select areas, on X for iOS and Android
Precise location (latitude and longitude)Findable through the X APIWhen you use the in-app camera and switch on precise location

Here's the sourced detail most people never hear. X says that on earlier versions of X for iOS, a post always contained both the location name and your device's precise location. For iOS versions before 6.26, precise location was attached automatically along with the general location. Sharing precise location from the in-app camera needs X for iOS 6.26 or later, or X for Android 5.55 or later.

Turning on precise location

X says you need two switches on: location services for the X app at device level, and precise location inside the X app. On an iPhone:

  1. Open your device's Settings and tap Privacy.
  2. Tap Location Services and turn it on.
  3. Find the X app in the list and choose While using the app. Choosing Never keeps it off.
  4. In the X app, tap your profile icon, then Settings and privacy.
  5. Tap Privacy and Safety.
  6. Under Safety, tap Precise location in the Location section and turn it on or off.

X says turning this on lets it collect, store and use your precise location, such as GPS data, for things like location-specific trends and content and ads tailored to where you are, as well as showing your location on posts you choose to tag.

Adding a location to a post

  1. With precise location on, write a post as normal. If you've never added a location before, you may get a prompt asking to turn on precise location.
  2. Tap the location icon in the compose box to see a list of places.
  3. Pick the location you want on the post.

Adding a photo works slightly differently. When you select a photo or GIF, you might see Add location and suggested places under the image. Tap one, or search with the location marker icon or Search locations. If you took the photo with X's in-app camera and tap the location icon, X says your precise latitude and longitude are attached and findable via the API.

The setting that keeps adding your location

This is why people think X is tracking them without asking. X says once you post with a location, your next post from the same device automatically shows your general location, using where you are now. It sticks until you remove it.

Stopping location on your posts

  1. Tap the compose icon.
  2. Tap the location icon to open the list of locations. Your current location is highlighted.
  3. Tap X in the top left to remove it.

X says your location then won't appear on future posts until you choose to add one again. You can also switch post location off at any time, and X says you can delete your past location data from showing on your posts in one place.

What removing your location can't undo

  • Copies elsewhere. X says deleting location data doesn't guarantee it's removed from copies held by third-party apps or in outside search results.
  • Direct Messages. The setting doesn't remove locations you've shared in DMs.
  • Other apps. Third-party apps and websites may let you post with location, including precise location. X asks those developers to be clear about what they share, so check their settings too.

X also says that if a place listing is wrong, you report it through Foursquare's Help Center, while abusive posts are reported to X.

Is post location worth using?

X's own advice is to be careful. It compares it to not posting your home address, and suggests sharing location only on updates where it adds something, like 'The parade is starting now'. Once you post something online, it says, it's out there.

If you want to check everything else your account gives away, a privacy audit of your X account is a good next step.

What I'd do

I'd leave precise location off unless you post from events or places where the location is the point. If you do switch it on, remember the next post carries your location automatically, so remove it from the compose box when you're posting from home. And if you've ever used the in-app camera with location on, assume those posts carry more detail than the city label suggests.
