How to Add Music to an Instagram Post (Photos and Carousels)

To add music to an Instagram post, start a new post, choose your photos, tap Next, tap Add music, pick a song and the section that plays, then tap Done and share. One song plays across a carousel. Availability can vary by app version, account type and country.

A photo with the right song behind it feels more alive in the feed. Instagram lets you attach music to photo posts and carousels, not only to Stories and Reels, so a set of holiday snaps or a product shoot can come with a soundtrack. If you run a business account, though, the picture is a little more complicated, and I'll be clear about where the limits are.

This guide follows Instagram's own help pages on adding music. Instagram moves its menus around between app versions and rolls features out gradually, so the labels on your phone may not match mine exactly. If you can't see the music option at all, the troubleshooting section below goes through the usual causes. For Stories specifically, I've covered adding background music to an Instagram Story video in its own guide.

How to add music to an Instagram post with photos

The usual route for a photo post looks like this:

  1. Open Instagram and tap the plus icon to create a new post.
  2. Choose Post, then pick the photo, or several photos for a carousel.
  3. Tap Next, then Next again if the app takes you to the edit screen first.
  4. Tap Add music. It's usually shown with a music note icon near the top or in the options on the screen.
  5. Search for a song, or browse the suggestions, and tap the one you want.
  6. Choose which part of the song plays by dragging the slider, then tap Done.
  7. Add your caption and settings, then tap Share.

Your post will show the song name under your username. People who tap it can usually see more about the track.

A carousel plays one song across the whole set of photos, rather than a different track for each slide. Two points to keep in mind:

  • Pick the photos and put them in the order you want before you add the music, because the song plays over the lot.
  • Choose the section of the song that suits the mood of the whole post, not just the first photo.
  • Keep the carousel to the photos that earn their place. A tight set with a good song beats a long one with a clip that cuts off.

If you want to mix video and photos in one go, my guide to posting more than one photo to your Instagram Story shows the options on the Stories side.

Choosing the section of the song for your Instagram post

Instagram lets you pick the moment of the track that plays, and this is the part most people skip. Spend a minute on it:

  • Listen for the part with the clearest beat or melody and drag the slider to start there.
  • Pick a section that fits the length of your post, so it doesn't stop abruptly.
  • If your post has a caption that people need to read, avoid a loud section with heavy vocals.
  • Preview it with your phone's volume at a normal level, since many people watch in public.

Why the music option might be missing on Instagram

If you can't see Add music, work through these checks:

  • Update the app. Music on posts has been rolled out in stages, so an older version may not have it.
  • Look in a different place. The button can sit on the edit screen, the share screen or in the options along the top, depending on your version.
  • Check your account type. Instagram's music library can differ between personal accounts and business accounts. Music available to one type may not be offered to the other, and I'd only rely on what your own app shows.
  • Check your country. Music licensing varies by region, so some songs, or the feature itself, may not appear where you live.
  • Restart or log in again. Close Instagram fully, reopen it and try once more.

If a particular song has vanished from the list, it may have been removed from the library, or it isn't available in your region. Pick another and carry on.

Instagram music and business accounts: what to check

It's common to be told that business accounts can't use popular music, and there's some truth in it, because rights for commercial use are different from rights for personal use. I can only point you to what Instagram's own pages and app show, and they change. So before you plan a campaign around a song:

  • Open the music picker on your own account and see which songs are offered.
  • Read the wording Instagram displays when a track is limited.
  • Choose from the tracks the app offers rather than adding sound from another source.
  • If you're promoting a product, treat music rights as a question for the rights holder or the platform, not as something to guess.

My article on adding a song to your Instagram Story legally goes into the same issue from the Stories angle. If your aim is to reuse the sound from a clip you've seen, read how to download music from Instagram Reels first so you understand what's allowed.

Making your Instagram post with music perform better

Once the song is attached, a few small habits help the post do its job.

  • Post when your followers are around. My guide to the best time to post Instagram Reels gives a starting point you can adapt to feed posts.
  • Write a caption that works with the sound off, because many people scroll silently.
  • Use a track that suits your brand's tone, whether that's calm, lively or warm.
  • Keep an eye on which posts get saved and shared, then repeat what works.
  • If you also post Stories, my tips on getting more views on Instagram Stories pair nicely with your feed posts.
