Flair is the little coloured label beside a username or on a post, and it trips up plenty of new Reddit users. You see everyone else with one, you go looking for the setting, and there's nothing. That's because flair belongs to each community, not to you.

User flair and post flair on Reddit: what's the difference?

There are two kinds, and people mix them up constantly.

• User flair is a label attached to you inside one community, such as a role, a hobby level or a location.
• Post flair is a label attached to a single post, usually a topic tag, picked when you submit it.

Reddit's help says each community sets up its own flair, so the choices you see in one community won't match another. Neither type follows you around the whole site.

Adding user flair on Reddit from a computer

On the website, Reddit's help describes this route:

1. Go to the community where you'd like flair.
2. Look at the right side of the community page for USER FLAIR.
3. Click the edit icon next to it.
4. Choose the flair you want and save it.
5. Tick Show my flair on this subreddit if you'd like it displayed. Reddit's current wording calls these places communities, but you may still see the older word subreddit.

If you can't see a USER FLAIR option at all, that's Reddit's way of telling you the community hasn't switched it on for members.

Adding user flair on the Reddit app

On iPhone and Android, Reddit's help gives the same route for both:

1. Open the community you want flair in.
2. Tap the overflow menu in the upper right of the community page.
3. Choose Change user flair.
4. Select your flair and tap Apply.

Menus vary a little by app version, so if the wording differs, look for the overflow menu on the community page rather than your own profile.

Adding post flair as you submit to a Reddit community

Post flair is picked while you're writing the post, not afterwards. Reddit's Post Flair article explains that communities can offer or require it. If a community requires flair, you'll need to choose one as part of submitting.

1. Start your post and choose the community.
2. Fill in the title and body.
3. Look for the flair option on the post form and select the closest match.
4. Submit the post.

Pick carefully. Moderators often use flair to sort posts, and the wrong tag can get a post removed even when the content is fine.

A tip from watching people use Reddit: look at how long-standing members in that community use their flair before you pick yours. Some communities use it for expertise, some for fun, and some for location. Following the local custom keeps you on the right side of the moderators.

What to do if you can't add flair on Reddit

This is the most common problem, and Reddit's help is clear about it: if you don't see the USER FLAIR option in a community, only that community's moderators can set it up for you. In other words, there's nothing wrong with your account.

• Check the community's rules and sidebar for instructions on how to request flair.
• Message the moderators politely and say which flair you'd like and why.
• Try a different community that does let members choose flair.
• Update the app if the flair menu doesn't appear on your phone.

Reddit's moderators can also grant user flair themselves, so asking nicely is often all it takes.

Reddit Pro profile flair is a separate thing
