To join a community on X (formerly Twitter), tap the Communities icon in the left-hand menu (or the More menu on mobile), browse or search for a topic, open the one you want, and tap Join Community. Some communities need admin approval, so you might answer a question first before you get in.

What communities on X are

Communities on X are topic-based groups where members post and reply, but only other members in that community see those posts in that feed. Think of it as a smaller room inside the main platform, built around a shared interest like marketing, cycling, or a specific industry.

You do not need a different app or a separate login. It all sits inside your normal X account. Once you join, posts from that community can show up in your home timeline alongside everything else.

Some communities are open to anyone. Others are set to require approval from an admin or moderator before you get in. I will walk through both below.

Before you start: check your account is ready

You need an active X account and you need to be logged in on the app or the website. If your account is new or restricted in any way, you might not see the Communities option at all, so sort that first.

It also helps to have your profile reasonably filled in. Admins of private or approval-based communities sometimes look at your profile before letting you in, so a blank profile with no photo can work against you.

How to find Communities on X

On desktop, log into X and look at the left-hand menu. You should see a Communities icon, usually shown as a group of people. Click it and you will land on a page showing communities you are already in, plus suggestions and a search bar.

On the mobile app, the layout is tighter. If you do not see Communities directly in the bottom bar, tap the More menu, which is usually represented by three lines or a plus icon depending on your setup. Communities should be listed there.

If you still cannot find it, update your app. Older versions sometimes hide newer navigation items or display them differently.

Step by step: joining a community

Here is the straightforward path for joining most communities on X.

  1. Open the Communities section from the left-hand menu or More menu.
  2. Use the search bar to type a keyword related to your interest, such as content marketing or small business.
  3. Scroll through the results and click on a community that looks right for you.
  4. Read the community description and rules, which usually sit near the top of the page.
  5. Tap or click the Join Community button.
  6. If asked, answer any screening questions the admin has set up.

For open communities, you are usually in straight away. For ones with approval settings, you will see a message saying your request is pending.

What happens with approval-based communities

Some community admins choose to vet new members. This might mean answering a short question about why you want to join, or it could simply be a manual approval step with no question at all.

If this is the case, do not expect instant access. Approval depends entirely on the admin or moderators checking and accepting your request, and that can take anywhere from minutes to days depending on how active they are.

I would not spam the same admin with repeated requests. If you have waited a reasonable amount of time and heard nothing, it is fine to look for a similar community elsewhere rather than keep pushing.

Finding the right communities to join

Search by specific terms rather than broad ones. Searching marketing is going to give you a flood of options, many inactive or loosely related. Searching something narrower, like email marketing or freelance copywriting, gets you closer to a group that matches what you want.

Check when the community was last active before joining. A community with thousands of members but no recent posts is not going to give you much. A smaller, active one is usually more useful.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Look at the pinned rules or description too. Some communities are strictly for sharing work, others are for discussion only, and joining one expecting the wrong format can be a waste of your time.

What you can do once you have joined

Once you are a member, you can post directly into that community feed, reply to other members posts, and see community-only content in your timeline. You will also get a small label on your post showing which community it was shared in.

You can leave a community at any point if it is not what you expected. This is usually done from the community page itself, with an option to leave listed near the join or member status button.

I cannot tell you every moderation or management feature available to admins, since those settings vary by community and are controlled by whoever runs it. If you are only joining as a member, you will not need to worry about that side of things anyway.

A few practical tips

Read posts in a community for a few days before jumping in with your own content. It gives you a feel for tone and what is welcomed there.

Do not join a long list of communities all at once and then disappear. A handful of active, relevant ones will serve you better than twenty you never check.

If a community turns out to be inactive or not useful, leave it. There is no reason to stay in groups that add nothing to your feed or your time on the platform.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special account to join communities on X

No, you just need a normal, active X account that you are logged into. There is no separate account type or extra app required for Communities.

Why is my community join request still pending

Some communities require admin approval before you get in. This depends on the admin reviewing your request manually, so timing varies and there is no fixed waiting period.

Can I leave a community after joining

Yes, you can leave at any time from the community page itself, usually near the join or member status button. There is no penalty for leaving.

Can I see community posts without joining

Some communities are visible to non-members, but you will not be able to post or reply until you join. Private or restricted communities may not be visible at all until you are a member.
