Checkout 51 works by giving you cash back on specific grocery and household items: you add the week's offers in the app, buy the products, then photograph your whole receipt and claim them before the offer expires. The rule people miss is the deadline, because US offers run Sunday to Saturday and the receipt must be uploaded while the offer is still live.
Checkout 51 is a receipt-scanning cash back app, and its weekly rhythm is what makes it different from apps that track your card. Get the timing right and it's straightforward; get it wrong and a full trolley of eligible items earns nothing. This guide uses Checkout 51's own help centre throughout.
How Checkout 51 works, step by step
- Create a free account in the App Store or Google Play app.
- Browse the offers. Tap an offer to read its conditions, because the brand, size and quantity matter.
- Add the offers you want, then go shopping as normal and keep your receipt.
- Claim them. Tap Redeem, select the items you bought and match the quantity to your receipt.
- Upload the receipt. Photograph the entire receipt, adding sections if it's long.
Brands pay Checkout 51 to find new people to try their products, which is why the offers are product-specific rather than a percentage off your whole shop.
The weekly offer calendar
| Country | Offers go live | Offers expire |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Sundays at 12:00 AM in each time zone | The following Saturday at 11:59 PM |
| Canada | Thursdays at 12:00 AM in each time zone | The following Wednesday at 11:59 PM |
Checkout 51 says receipts must be uploaded while the offers you're claiming are still live. So a Saturday-night shop in the US needs uploading that night, not on Sunday morning when the list has rolled over.
Rules that stop a claim working
- No stacking. Checkout 51 doesn't allow stacking cash back offers. Each offer needs its own separate item, and a gift set containing 2 or 3 eligible products only counts toward a single offer.
- Your own country only. Receipts can only be for purchases made in the country where you live, and your in-app location has to be set to your own state or province. Canadian offers pay in Canadian currency.
- The whole receipt. Partial photos are a common reason for trouble, so include every section.
How gas offers work on Checkout 51
Gas offers follow different rules from grocery offers, and Checkout 51 says they're only available to members located in the United States. Interestingly, its help page points you to its partner's station list on the Upside website, so the fuel side runs through a partnership.
| Gas rule | What Checkout 51 says |
|---|---|
| Time to buy | 4 hours after you add the offer |
| Time to upload | 20 hours to upload a photo of the receipt |
| Processing | Within 10 business days |
| Daily limit | Up to two gas offers a day, up to 50 gallons per offer, so 100 gallons a day |
| Receipts | One receipt per gas offer |
| Minimum purchase | None |
Instant Offers, online offers and surveys
US members also get Instant Offers, which skip the receipt photo altogether. You add the offers in the app, and Checkout 51 gives you a single barcode to scan at the register at eligible stores, so the saving comes off your total there and then. These offers have their own expiry dates, so check each one is still available before you reach the till.
Online shopping offers work without a receipt. You tap Shop Now inside the app, which creates an electronic link between Checkout 51 and the retailer, so start every online order from the app rather than a bookmark.
There's also a Surveys tab. If a survey decides you're not eligible, Checkout 51 says you still get a partial reward, but clicking through without reading the questions can disqualify you.
Cashing out and the inactivity rule
Once your balance reaches Checkout 51's cash-out minimum, you cash out from the Account page, opened via the profile icon at the top right. Checkout 51 says it can mail a cheque, and PayPal and Venmo cash-outs arrive within 5-15 business days.
The rule I'd want every new user to know is the inactivity charge. Checkout 51 says an account counts as inactive if there are no claimed offers in any consecutive period of 180 days, and it may then take a monthly Inactive Account Management charge out of your cash back balance. If you stop using the app, cash out first.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One more thing that confuses people: Checkout 51's referral programme has finished, with no referral link and no plans to bring it back. Any video promising referral earnings is out of date.
My verdict on how Checkout 51 works
Checkout 51 suits people who already buy branded groceries and don't mind photographing receipts every week. It's slower and more manual than card-linked apps, and the Sunday-to-Saturday window and the 180-day inactivity rule are the two things that cost people their balance. Treat it as a small weekly saving, not an earner.
