How to add birthdate on X: Step by Step on X (Twitter), 2026

Go to Settings and privacy, then Your account, then Account information, then Birth date. Enter your date of birth and choose who can see it (only you, people you follow, your followers, or everyone). Tap Save. You need the X app or website and a confirmed account to make the change.

Why your birthdate matters on X

I get asked this a lot, so let me be plain about it. Adding your birthdate on X (formerly Twitter) helps the platform show you age appropriate content and ads. It also lets you add it to your profile if you want, though that part is optional.

Some people skip this step when they first sign up. Then they want to go back and add it later. The process is straightforward, but the menu layout changes every so often, so I will walk you through where things sit right now.

You do not need a business account or a verified badge to do this. Any X account can add or edit a birthdate.

Where to find the birthdate setting

You will find this under your account settings, not under your profile editor. That trips people up because they go looking in the wrong place first.

On the app, tap your profile picture in the top corner to open the side menu. On desktop, click More in the left hand navigation. Either way, you are heading to Settings and privacy.

Step by step: adding your birthdate on mobile

Here is the full process on the X app for iOS or Android.

  1. Open the X app and log in.
  2. Tap your profile icon to open the menu.
  3. Select Settings and privacy.
  4. Tap Your account.
  5. Tap Account information.
  6. Tap Birth date.
  7. Enter your day, month, and year of birth.
  8. Choose who can see your birthdate (this may need to be set separately for month and day versus year).
  9. Tap Save or the confirm button.

Once saved, you should see a confirmation message. If you do not, go back into the menu and check whether the date stored.

Step by step: adding your birthdate on desktop

The desktop browser version follows the same logic but with a different layout.

  1. Log into X on your browser.
  2. Click More in the left sidebar.
  3. Click Settings and privacy.
  4. Click Your account.
  5. Click Account information.
  6. Click Birth date.
  7. Enter your date of birth in the fields provided.
  8. Set the visibility options.
  9. Click Save.

If you have two factor authentication switched on, X may ask you to confirm your password before the change goes through. That is normal and not a sign of a problem.

Choosing who sees your birthdate

X lets you set separate visibility for your birth month and day versus your birth year. You can set this to only you, people you follow, your followers, or everyone.

I would recommend keeping your birth year private unless you have a specific reason to show it. Showing the month and day is harmless enough if you want friends or followers to wish you well, but the full date including year gives away more than most people realise.

You can change these visibility settings at any time without having to re-enter your birthdate.

What to do if the birthdate option will not save

Sometimes the save button does not seem to respond, or the date reverts after you leave the page. A few things to check first.

Make sure you are using a fully updated version of the app. Old versions sometimes have bugs in the settings menu. Try logging out and back in, or closing and reopening the app.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you are on a browser, try a different one or clear your cache. This fixes the issue more often than people expect.

If none of that works, there is no guaranteed fix I can offer here. X does not publish a specific support path for this exact problem, so your best option is to try again later or contact X support directly through the app.

Can you remove your birthdate once it is added

Yes, you can go back into the same Account information menu and clear the date fields, though X may still ask for a reason or confirmation depending on how the feature is set up when you do it.

I cannot confirm every variation of this flow for every account type, so if you see different wording or steps on your screen, follow what X shows you rather than this article word for word.

A few final points worth knowing

Your birthdate is used by X for account related purposes such as content settings, not just for show. That is worth remembering before you enter an inaccurate date for privacy reasons.

If you run a business account, I still suggest using your own correct birthdate rather than a placeholder, since this ties to account verification and support requests down the line.

Keep your login details and two factor method up to date too. Account settings changes like this one often require that extra confirmation step, and you do not want to get locked out halfway through.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to add a birthdate on X

No, it is not compulsory for existing accounts, though X may prompt you to add one. New accounts are typically asked for a birthdate during sign up as part of age related checks.

Can other people see my birth year on X

Only if you set the visibility to allow it. You can choose to show your birth year to everyone, followers, people you follow, or keep it private to only you.

Why can I not find the Birth date option in settings

Menu layouts shift over time, so check under Settings and privacy, then Your account, then Account information. If it is still missing, update your app or try the desktop site.

Will changing my birthdate affect my account in other ways

It may affect age related content and ad settings. I cannot confirm every downstream effect, so if your account type has specific rules, check how X applies them before making changes.
