Grok (by xAI) and ChatGPT (by OpenAI) are both general AI assistants, so neither is better at everything. Grok's standout is live search across the web and X for breaking news and trends. ChatGPT offers a wider toolset, including deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, data analysis and custom GPTs. For most small businesses ChatGPT is the easier everyday choice, with Grok worth adding if X matters to your marketing.
Grok has gone from a button on X that most people ignored to an assistant plenty of business owners are now trying alongside ChatGPT. So which should you use? I'd frame it differently: what job are you hiring it for? The two overlap a lot, but each company puts the emphasis in a different place, and that tells you where each one is likely to earn its keep in a small business.
Everything below comes from xAI's own Grok page and OpenAI's own help centre. I haven't included any speed or accuracy claims, because neither company's pages give you a fair like-for-like measure, and anyone who tells you one is simply smarter is guessing.
What's the difference between Grok and ChatGPT?
Grok is made by xAI. ChatGPT is made by OpenAI. Both are general assistants you can chat with on the web and in mobile apps, and both can search the web, work with files and images, and remember your preferences.
The clearest difference is where Grok looks for what's happening now. xAI says Grok searches the web and X live, with real-time X integration for breaking news and trends. If your business lives on X, or you need to know what people are saying about a topic today, that's Grok's home turf.
ChatGPT's strength is the breadth of its toolset. OpenAI lists search, deep research for multi-step research tasks, image generation and editing, file and audio uploads, data analysis on spreadsheets, voice mode, memory, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs you can build and share.
Grok vs ChatGPT: side by side
Here's how the features line up, using only what each company publishes.
| Feature | Grok | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Where to use it | Web, iOS and Android | Web, desktop and mobile apps |
| Live search | Web and X, with live citations | Web search for recent information |
| Research mode | Multi-agent mode on SuperGrok | Deep research for multi-step reports |
| Images and video | Grok Imagine: text to image and video | Image generation and editing |
| Files | File, PDF and image analysis | Documents, spreadsheets, presentations and audio |
| Voice | Voice conversations | Voice mode |
| Remembers you | Memory across chats | Memory you can view and edit |
| Your standing instructions | Custom instructions | Custom instructions |
| Build your own assistant | Not listed on the Grok page | Custom GPTs and the GPT Store |
| Recurring jobs | Not listed on the Grok page | Scheduled tasks |
A gap in the table means that company's own page doesn't list it, not that it can never do it. Check the current features in each app before you decide.
Is Grok better than ChatGPT for business?
My suggestion for most small businesses is that ChatGPT's wider toolset makes it the easier everyday choice: projects to keep client work together, scheduled tasks, data analysis on spreadsheets and custom GPTs you can share with your team. Grok makes the most sense when your work depends on what's happening right now on X: social media managers, PR people, anyone running campaigns around trending topics, or a business that sells through its X audience.
You don't have to choose one forever. A setup I often suggest is ChatGPT or Claude as the main assistant, with Grok kept for trend checks. If Claude is on your shortlist too, I've compared Claude and ChatGPT side by side.
Which is better for social media?
If X is a main channel for you, Grok has an obvious advantage, because xAI says it pulls in breaking news, trends and posts as they happen. That makes it useful for spotting what to post about today and how people are reacting.
For writing the posts themselves, either will do the job if you give it a clear brief and examples of your own posts. Here's the prompt I'd run in Grok for a morning trend check.
Copy this prompt
I run a [type of business] that serves [who you serve].
Search X and the web for what people are talking about today around [your topic or industry].
Give me five conversations I could join, with a link to the source for each, and say why each one fits my audience.
Then draft one short post for each in a [plain / friendly / expert] tone. No hashtags unless they're being used in the conversation already.
Which is better for research and reports?
ChatGPT's deep research is designed for multi-step research tasks: it reads across several sources and produces a cited, structured report. Grok's multi-agent mode, which xAI includes with SuperGrok, runs several agents in parallel and merges their work into one cited answer, with each agent's reasoning shown.
Whichever you use, check the sources it cites before you rely on anything. Here's a prompt that works in both.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Research [question] for a [type of business] in [country or region].
Use only sources you can link to, and list them at the end.
Separate what the sources say from your own suggestions, and flag anything where the sources disagree.
Finish with three practical next steps for a business owner.
How do you get started with Grok?
xAI's own getting-started steps are short:
- Go to grok.com on the web, or download the iOS or Android app.
- Sign in with your X account or an email address, so your history follows you across devices.
- Start chatting, and switch modes when you need search, reasoning, voice or images.
Before you use it for work, add your custom instructions so it knows who you are and how you like answers written. Here's a starting point that works in Grok and in ChatGPT.
Copy this prompt into your custom instructions
I run [business name], a [type of business] for [who you serve].
Write in [UK / US] English, in a plain, friendly tone, with short sentences.
When you give me facts, tell me where they came from.
If you're not sure about something, say so rather than guessing.
Is Grok free to use?
xAI says Grok is free to try on the web and in the apps, and that its SuperGrok upgrade adds higher limits, priority access and multi-agent reasoning. You sign in with your X account or an email address. ChatGPT also has a free plan, and OpenAI notes that the tools you get depend on your plan and settings.
What about privacy?
Whichever assistant you use, the same rule applies: don't paste anything confidential until you've checked the settings. On the ChatGPT side, you can turn off model training in Settings, Data controls, and use temporary chats. For Grok, check xAI's privacy controls in the app before you share client material, and if you'd rather Grok stayed out of your X feed altogether, here's how to turn off the Grok button on X.
Tools that work well with either
For social work, a scheduler such as Buffer or Hootsuite keeps your approved posts organised once Grok or ChatGPT has helped you draft them. For research, keep your notes in Notion or Google Docs so the sources travel with the summary. And if you want ready-made prompts by job, my ChatGPT prompts list by profession works in Grok too.
If you'd like help working out which assistant your team should standardise on, this is how I work with business owners.
