Google Universal Cart is a single shopping cart that saves products from different retailers while you shop across Google Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app, then watches for price drops and restocks. It launched in the US on 15 October 2026, and Google's help page says it's currently available only in the United States.
Think of it as a wish list that does some of the legwork. Instead of a dozen tabs and screenshots, your items sit in one place, grouped by shop, and Google pings you when something gets cheaper or comes back in stock.
Everything here comes from Google's launch post and its Google Wallet help page, read in October 2026.
What Universal Cart does
Google lists four jobs for the cart:
- Saves products from multiple retailers. Add a handbag in AI Mode in Search and a sweater in the Gemini app later, and both are waiting in the same cart when you come back.
- Tracks prices and stock. Google says the cart is built on more than 60 billion continually refreshed product listings in its Shopping Graph, and sends notifications about price drops or items coming back in stock.
- Spots savings. It can show relevant promo codes and, if you allow it, card reward insights from cards saved in Google Wallet.
- Handles checkout. You either pay with Google Pay inside the cart, or send the items to the shop's own cart and finish there.
The two ways to check out
| Checkout route | How it works | Who you deal with |
|---|---|---|
| Check out with Google Pay | For participating merchants, you complete the purchase on Google using your saved payment methods | The merchant, who stays the seller of record |
| Check out on the merchant site | Google fills your cart on the shop's website, and you finish buying there | The merchant directly |
Either way, Google says you get confirmations and customer support from the merchant. If something goes wrong with an order, the help page is clear: contact the shop you bought from, not Google. Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants among those offering the simpler checkout.
The credit card rewards rule
This is the feature with the most conditions attached. Universal Cart can show AI-identified insights on offers and rewards from credit cards saved in your Google Wallet, but only if all of these are true:
- You have 2 or more credit cards saved in Google Wallet.
- Google Wallet personalisation is turned on.
- At least one of your saved cards offers a reward for that merchant. When it does, the insight appears under that shop's items in your cart.
Google adds that the offers and rewards shown are decided by your card provider, not Google, and you always choose which card to use. If you'd rather not have Wallet personalising anything, you can switch personalisation off in the Google Wallet app (profile icon, Your data in Wallet) or under Data and Privacy in Settings on wallet.google.com, and the reward insights go with it.
What Gemini and AI Mode can't do with your cart
Here's the limit most people won't expect. You can save items to your cart from the Gemini app and AI Mode, but Google says these surfaces have limited access to your data and may not be able to list your cart items or their status in a chat, add items directly into your cart, or give you updates about an order.
So don't ask Gemini "what's in my cart?" and assume the answer is complete. Open the cart itself, where items are organised by merchant and you can review or remove them.
How to track orders and turn off alerts
After you buy, the My Orders tab in the cart shows status updates such as shipped or delivered for supported merchants, plus a list of recent purchases. Google warns that some merchants don't share order data back, so not every order appears there.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Adding items means you may get emails and push notifications about price drops and availability. Google says Android users are opted in to push alerts automatically. To turn off the emails, go to myaccount.google.com, click Data and privacy, open Emails from Google services and untick Cart in the Shopping section. For push alerts, open the Google app, tap your profile icon, then Settings, then Notifications, and switch Shopping off.
What it means if you sell online
If you run a shop, the takeaway is that more buying decisions are starting inside Google's own surfaces. Your products need to be findable in Google Shopping, and your prices and stock need to be accurate, because the cart is built to alert shoppers the moment either changes. My guide on how to show up in Google AI Mode answers covers the visibility side, and if you're new to the assistant itself, start with how to use Gemini.
My verdict
Universal Cart is a handy idea for anyone in the US who shops across several stores at once, especially in the run-up to the holidays. Use it to track prices, not just to store items. Keep two things in mind: the card rewards only appear with two or more cards saved and personalisation on, and Gemini can save to the cart but can't reliably tell you what's in it. Check the cart itself before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
What is Google Universal Cart?
Google describes Universal Cart as an intelligent shopping cart that saves products from multiple retailers across Google Search and the Gemini app, tracks price drops and restocks, and lets you check out with Google Pay or on the merchant's site.
Is Google Universal Cart available in the UK?
Not yet. Google's help page says the feature is currently available only in the United States.
How do I see credit card rewards in Universal Cart?
Save 2 or more credit cards in Google Wallet, turn on Google Wallet personalisation, then add items. If a saved card offers a reward for that merchant, an insight appears under the merchant's items.
Can Gemini show what's in my Universal Cart?
Not reliably. Google says Gemini Apps and AI Mode can save items to your cart but may be unable to list cart items, add items directly or give order updates in a chat.
Who do I contact about a Universal Cart order?
The merchant. Google says the merchant remains the seller of record and provides confirmations and customer support.
