Google Photos Not Showing All Photos? Where to Look (2026)

If Google Photos isn't showing all your photos, first check you're in the right Google Account and that Backup is turned on, because only backed-up photos appear. Then look in Recently Added, Archive, the trash and photo stacks. Google says photos taken before 4 AM are sorted into the previous day.

You scroll your Google Photos library and the pictures you know you took are simply absent. If you run a business from your phone, shooting stock, events or client jobs, a gap in the grid is more than a nuisance.

Google's own help page on finding lost photos is clear that most of these cases come down to a short list of causes. I've turned it into an order you can work through on an iPhone, and the same ideas apply on Android and on the web. Screens change between app versions, so treat my menu names as a guide.

Checking you're in the right Google Account for your missing photos

Google puts this first, and it's the cause I'd check before anything else: some photos can seem to disappear simply because you're signed in to a different account. If you have a personal and a work address on the same phone, this happens more than you'd think.

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial at the top.
  3. Look at the email address shown and check it's the account you expect.
  4. Switch accounts if it isn't, and look again.

Is Backup on for the photos Google Photos isn't showing?

Google says your missing photos or videos might not be backed up to Google Photos at all. It also says you can only search for backed-up photos, so a photo that never uploaded won't turn up however you search.

  1. Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Tap Photos settings, then Backup.
  3. Check Backup is turned on.
  4. Check the backup account is the right Google Account.

On iPhone and iPad, Google adds a warning: don't quit the Google Photos app while it's backing up. If you swipe it away every time you finish, the queue may stall. If the missing items were files you stored in Drive rather than pictures, my guide to recovering deleted files from Google Drive covers that side.

Using Recently Added and search when Google Photos hides some photos

Google suggests two quick searches. For a recent photo, tap Search at the bottom, type Recently Added and browse. If it isn't there, search for what's in the picture, such as a place, an object or a person you've named.

If search finds nothing, Google says to try a different keyword, or search again in 3 to 5 days, because it can take a while for photos to be searchable. So a photo from this morning might not be findable by keyword yet even though it exists.

Dates, timestamps and the 4 AM rule in Google Photos

This catches people out. If you suddenly lose photos from a day, they may have a different date. Google says photos taken before 4 AM are sorted into the previous day, so a late-night event can sit under the day before.

Scanned or downloaded photos can also carry the wrong date, because Google says the timestamp may be wrong when the device you got them from had incorrect date and time settings. Scroll to the days around the one you expected, and check Google's help for changing timestamps if a whole batch is out of order.

Looking in Archive, Locked Folder and photo stacks

Three places hide photos on purpose, and Google names all of them.

  • Archive: if you can't find a screenshot or a photo you don't regularly see in your gallery view, it may be archived. On iPhone, tap Collections, then Archive.
  • Locked Folder: Google says you can look for photos in a Locked Folder, which keeps items out of the main grid.
  • Photo stacks: if a photo seems to be missing, it could be inside a stack. Tap the stack, tap the Thumbnail menu, then tap Multi-select to see everything in it.

Checking the trash for photos that Google Photos stopped showing

Google says photos and videos you delete stay in the trash for 30 days before they're permanently deleted. If you or someone sharing your phone tapped delete, the picture may be sitting there waiting. Open Collections, then the trash, and restore anything you want back.

There's a trap with other gallery apps. Google warns that if you use another photo app and delete photos there, you might delete a photo before Google Photos has had the chance to back it up.

File size and type limits for photos that never reached Google Photos

Some items won't upload at all. Google's backup help says photos can't exceed 200 MB or 200 megapixels, and videos can't exceed 10 GB. If a file is outside what Google Photos supports, it may not back up, so it never shows in your library.

To see what made it, Google suggests going to photos.google.com on a computer. Every photo and video you find there has been backed up, which makes it a useful source of truth when the phone app looks incomplete.

What Google Takeout and permanent deletion mean for missing photos

Be realistic here. Google says permanently deleted items can't be recovered, and that Google Takeout exports your current data but won't recover lost or deleted items. So if a photo is gone from the trash too, no export will bring it back.

That's the argument for keeping Backup on and for not leaving important client images only in the gallery. Once they're safe, a nice way to enjoy older pictures is to revisit them, and my guide to seeing your Memories on Facebook shows how Facebook handles the same idea.

When your Google Photos library still looks incomplete

Work through the list in order: account, Backup, search, dates, archive, stacks, trash, limits. If you've done all of them and a sizeable chunk is still missing, use the feedback option in Google Photos or the help community, and describe what you checked. Don't delete anything from the phone until you're sure it's in your library.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Google Photos not showing all my photos?

Google says common reasons are signing in to a different account, Backup being off or set to another account, photos sitting in Archive, a Locked Folder or a photo stack, or items still in the trash.

Why do some photos show under the wrong day?

Google says photos taken before 4 AM are sorted into the previous day, and photos from a device with the wrong date and time settings can have an incorrect timestamp.

How long do deleted photos stay in the Google Photos trash?

Google says photos and videos you delete stay in the trash for 30 days before they're permanently deleted.

Can Google Photos search find every photo straight away?

No. Google says it can take a while for photos to be searchable, and suggests searching again in 3 to 5 days if a keyword search finds nothing.

Which files may not back up to Google Photos?

Google says photos can't exceed 200 MB or 200 megapixels, and videos can't exceed 10 GB. Unsupported file types may not work.
