Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy is Microsoft's business email on your own domain, sold and managed through GoDaddy's Email & Office Dashboard, and depending on the plan it can include email security and Office apps such as Word and Excel. You add users in that dashboard, but security settings like DKIM and MFA are switched on in Microsoft's own admin pages with your Microsoft 365 login.
Here's the catch. Not every address you create is a mailbox. Forwards, aliases, distribution groups and shared mailboxes have no username or password of their own, so nobody can sign in to them directly. If you later want one to be a full account with its own inbox, GoDaddy's instruction is to delete it and create it again as a user.
The four address types, side by side
| Address type | What it does | Example from GoDaddy |
|---|---|---|
| Forward | Delivers mail to another email account | jane@ forwards to her personal Gmail |
| Alias | A different address added to one mailbox; replies come from the main address | careers@ delivers to jane@ |
| Distribution group | One address that reaches everyone in the group | team@ reaches three employees |
| Shared mailbox | A team inbox several people can read and send from, with permission | questions@ for two assistants |
The difference that matters most is between an alias and a shared mailbox. When Jane replies to careers@, the sender sees jane@. A shared mailbox lets several people send as questions@, and it has its own storage, a shared calendar and contacts. A distribution group can also reach someone outside your domain, such as a supplier, once you've added them as a shared contact.
Adding users and admins
As with Titan, you have to set up any existing accounts as users in the Email & Office Dashboard before you can buy new ones. When you create a user, you choose the Microsoft 365 account type, a password or temporary password, and up to 5 addresses to get the account notifications.
The Administrator permissions setting deserves a moment's thought. An admin can create aliases and edit shared contacts, and you need admin rights to change MFA or set up DKIM. The first user on a domain is made an admin by default. If you add a user on a different domain, you can also link the domains so they share contacts, calendars and files.
Turning on DKIM
DKIM is another way of telling recipients that it's really you sending the message, and not someone pretending to be you. Microsoft 365 sets it up automatically only for the starter onmicrosoft.com domain. For your own domain, you do it yourself, and you repeat it for every domain in your organisation.
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Defender Portal and select your domain under DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM).
- Copy the hostname and value of both DKIM keys.
- In your DNS, add two CNAME records using those hostnames and values.
- Wait for the records to spread. Most DNS changes work within an hour, but allow up to 48 hours.
- Back in the Defender Portal, turn on Sign messages for this domain with DKIM signatures.
If you also have Advanced Email Security, there's a second DKIM key to add as a TXT record through the Proofpoint dashboard, and you'll need a GoDaddy Guide to give you access to its Domains section first. DKIM sits alongside SPF, and if you've not met that one yet, here's what an SPF record does.
MFA and security defaults
MFA asks for a second check, such as a text message code, each time someone signs in, so a stolen password isn't enough on its own. You switch it on per user from the Per-user multifactor authentication page, signed in with your Microsoft 365 address, not your GoDaddy login. Select the users, choose Enforce MFA, and each of them sets up a sign-in method. GoDaddy recommends adding a backup method in case you lose the first one. If you turn MFA off and people are still asked for it, check that security defaults is off too.
Advanced Email Security limits
Advanced Email Security, from Proofpoint, scans messages, adds colour-coded warning banners, quarantines suspicious email and encrypts messages in transit. GoDaddy says it's starting to include it with each Microsoft 365 plan, though you may still see it offered at an added cost. People outside your organisation get a secure link to an encrypted message and can create a sign-in that stays active for 14 days.
| Advanced Email Security limit | As of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Outgoing messages | Up to 2,500 a day, and no more than 500 in 10 minutes |
| Email size, standard | Under 150 MB including attachments |
| Email size, encrypted | Under 35 MB including attachments |
| Coverage | All users and domains in your organisation |
How a migration to Microsoft 365 runs
Moving from Google, Yahoo or another provider is handled by GoDaddy's migration team, and it can start as soon as 24 hours after you submit the request. Set up the new mailboxes first, checking the plans against the storage of the accounts you're moving. Don't cancel your old service until the move is finished, and don't switch your MX records until you're ready to receive mail in the new mailboxes.
Only data on the email server moves. An IMAP migration brings email and folders, while an Exchange migration also brings contacts and calendars. Anything stored only on your computer stays put, unless you're on Outlook for Windows 2016 or newer and install the Outlook Assistant, which can move local .PST content such as POP email, signatures and the autocomplete cache. GoDaddy moves remaining emails within 48 to 72 hours of the switch, so check the new mailbox before you cancel the old one.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One more warning from GoDaddy's own help: it doesn't recommend setting up Microsoft 365 with POP or IMAP server settings. Use Outlook on the web, or Exchange settings in your email app.
My verdict on Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy
I'd choose it if your team already lives in Outlook, Word and Excel and you want GoDaddy to handle billing and migration for you. Set up DKIM and MFA on day one, and use shared mailboxes for team inboxes instead of handing round a password. If you're weighing whether to keep everything at GoDaddy at all, my roundup of GoDaddy alternatives sets out the other routes.
Email is where a lot of team time goes. Helping that team get time back with AI is where I come in. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams, telecom companies and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sign in to a shared mailbox on GoDaddy Microsoft 365?
No. Forwards, aliases, distribution groups and shared mailboxes don't have their own username or password. People get permission to access or send as a shared mailbox.
Does GoDaddy set up DKIM for Microsoft 365 automatically?
Only for the initial onmicrosoft.com domain. For your own domain you create the DKIM keys, add two CNAME records and then turn DKIM on, repeating it for each domain.
Who can turn on MFA for Microsoft 365 users?
Users with admin permissions, signed in with their Microsoft 365 email address and password rather than a GoDaddy login.
How many emails can I send with Advanced Email Security?
Up to 2,500 outgoing messages a day and no more than 500 in 10 minutes, as of October 2026.
Should I cancel my old email before migrating to Microsoft 365?
No. GoDaddy says not to cancel your current service until the migration is complete, and to check your new mailbox before cancelling.
