GoDaddy Auctions is GoDaddy's aftermarket for domains that are already registered, recently expired or about to expire, and you buy through bids, offers or a Buy Now price. Every bid and every accepted offer is binding, and until you verify your account you can only have 2 bids running or $1,500 in total bids, as of October 2026.
Here's the catch. The highest offer doesn't win on its own. On an offer listing the seller has to accept, and if they don't accept or counter within 7 days, your offer simply expires. On a bid listing the opposite applies: your bid is a contract, it can't be cancelled, and if it wins you must pay within 48 hours.
The listing types you'll see
| Listing type | How it works, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Offer/Counter-Offer | Offer any amount above the minimum. The seller accepts, counters or does nothing, and the offer expires after 7 days with no action. |
| Offer/Counter-Offer with Buy Now | Same as above, plus a Buy Now price you can accept at any time. |
| Value Priced | Bid-style auction for domains the previous owner no longer holds. GoDaddy's valuation sets the start price and the listing runs 15 days. |
| Expired Auctions | Expired domains enter auction 26 days after expiry and run for 10 days. |
| Expired Domains Closeout | A 5 day reverse auction after an Expired Auction ends with no bids. The price drops daily. |
| Buy Now | Buy straight from the listing without bidding or making an offer. |
All prices on GoDaddy Auctions listings are shown in US dollars, whatever currency you pay in. For a domain not registered at GoDaddy, an extra transfer fee may apply, and it varies by extension.
Expired domains: the timing that matters
Expired domains are where most of the surprises sit. The current registrant can reclaim the domain from redemption up to 30 days after it expires, even though it lists for auction at 26 days. If they renew, the domain is no longer for sale and GoDaddy cancels the auction and refunds any payment. Once someone places a bid, though, the registrant can no longer renew it in their own account.
Auctions can also run long. GoDaddy may extend an auction when bids arrive in its final moments, and a clock icon marks domains with extended time. If you're bidding at the last second, expect the clock to move.
Proxy bidding and the increment table
You don't set a bid and walk away with a guess. You enter your maximum, and the Proxy Bidding Service bids the smallest amount needed to lead, then raises your bid by the minimum increment each time you're outbid, until your maximum is reached. A proxy bid is binding and can't be cancelled.
| Current highest bid | Next bid increment |
|---|---|
| $5 to $499.99 | $5 |
| $500 to $999.99 | $10 |
| $1,000 to $2,499.99 | $25 |
| $2,500 to $4,999.99 | $50 |
| $5,000 to $9,999.99 | $100 |
| $10,000 to $24,999.99 | $250 |
| $25,000 to $49,999.99 | $500 |
| $50,000 and up | $1000 |
GoDaddy's own example: a domain sitting at $12 needs a bid of $17, and one at $1100 needs $1125. These increment figures are GoDaddy's as of October 2026.
Bidder verification
You can bid straight after buying a GoDaddy Auctions membership, which you need for expired and value priced domains. Offers don't need a membership. Until you're verified, you're held to 2 bids at a time or $1,500 in total. Verification is required for Value Priced, Expiry and Event Auctions once you need to go past that limit, and not needed if you only use Buy Now or Make Offer below it.
To verify, select Verify account next to Account Status and upload three things: a colour photo or scan of your government photo ID, a photo of you holding that same ID, and a utility bill, mobile phone bill, credit card statement or bank statement issued in the last 90 days showing the address GoDaddy has on file.
How to buy a domain on GoDaddy Auctions
- Search the domain or keyword, use Advanced Search filters if you need them, and check the listing type.
- Make sure a Country is selected in your account settings before you bid or offer.
- For an offer, enter an amount above the minimum shown in the box and agree to the terms. The seller has 7 days.
- For a bid, enter your maximum and select Continue to Review. Proxy bidding does the rest.
- Verify your account if you need more than 2 bids or $1,500 in total.
- Once you win, pay within 48 hours, then check Won under Bidding List for the delivery date.
Most won domains move into your account 1 to 15 days after the auction ends. For expired domains, the date after Expired domain ready on in the Won list is your estimate.
Search tools worth using

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
A few smaller rules are worth knowing. On an offer, your purchase price won't exceed your maximum offer plus the one-year renewal fee, where that applies. Expired domains from partner registrars are listed too. You can even bid on your own expired domain once it's listed, though GoDaddy recommends renewing it from your account instead, to avoid delays. And if you set up text alerts in your auctions settings, your mobile provider might charge for them and delivery isn't guaranteed.

My verdict on GoDaddy Auctions
I'd use it if you've found a name you want and you treat every bid as a purchase you've already made, because that's what a bid is. Set your maximum once, let proxy bidding work, and don't chase it in the final seconds. I'd skip bidding on an expired domain you need by a fixed date, since the owner can still reclaim it and delivery can take up to 15 days. If you're weighing where to register a new name instead, start with my pick of the best domain registrars, and if you're moving one out later, here's how to transfer a domain from GoDaddy.
