Garmin vs Apple Watch: Which Smartwatch Suits Your Day?

Apple Watch suits iPhone owners who want calls, messages, apps and health alerts on one watch they charge every day or two. Garmin suits runners, hikers and anyone who wants battery measured in weeks and a watch built around training. If your iPhone runs your day, get an Apple Watch; if your training or the outdoors does, look at Garmin first.

The biggest gap between these two isn't the screen or the sensors, it's how often you'll be reaching for a charger. I read Apple's pages for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, Garmin's smartwatch range page and Garmin's App Store listing for Garmin Connect.

Where Apple Watch shines

Apple Watch is built to work hand in hand with your iPhone. Series 12 gives you a Sleep score, blood oxygen readings, and an ECG app that checks for signs of AFib. Apple says it can also notify you of patterns of hypertension, worked out from how your blood vessels respond over 30-day periods. With a cellular model you can leave your iPhone at home on a run.

Ultra 4 is Apple's sports watch. It has a titanium case and sapphire crystal, and Apple says it was designed to be the ultimate running watch with the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch. Automatic Track Detection spots when you arrive at a running track.

Where Garmin shines

Garmin's range page is a reminder of how many types of watch it makes: Forerunner for running and triathlon, Venu and vivoactive for health and fitness, fenix and Enduro for long adventures, Instinct for rugged use, plus golf, diving and kids' models. Its battery filters run from up to 5-13 days, through up to 2-4 weeks, to up to 1+ month, with solar charging on some models.

Everything syncs to the Garmin Connect app, where Garmin's listing says you can analyse activities, build workouts and courses, review health trends and join leaderboards. It also syncs with Apple Health, MyFitnessPal and Strava, so your data isn't stuck in one place.

The charging and phone question

Here's the trade-off in Apple's own numbers. Series 12 gives up to 24 hours of normal use, and Ultra 4 stretches to up to 50 hours, or up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode. Garmin's slowest-draining models are listed in weeks and months. If you go away for a long weekend without a charger, that difference matters.

The second check is your phone. Apple's watch page says Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3 need an iPhone 11 or later. If anyone in your house uses Android, or you might switch phones, an Apple Watch can't come with you.

Who each watch suits

Apple Watch suits busy iPhone users who want messages, calls, Apple Fitness+ and health alerts in one place. Garmin suits runners training for a race, walkers and hikers who are out for hours, and people who'd rather charge once a week. My advice on Garmin or Apple Watch

Start with the phone in your pocket. If it's an iPhone and you want a watch that does almost everything, Apple Watch is the easy pick, and Ultra 4 is the one to look at if you run long. If you train seriously, are outdoors all day or simply hate charging, choose a Garmin from the range that matches your sport rather than the fanciest model. Wear it for a fortnight before judging, so you see a normal week of sleep and training.
