Fusion 360 vs AutoCAD: Which Autodesk Tool Do You Need?

Fusion, still widely searched as Fusion 360, suits people designing physical products in 3D, because it puts CAD, CAM, CAE and PCB design in one cloud tool. AutoCAD suits architects, engineers and drafters who work in precise 2D and 3D drawings and DWG files, and AutoCAD LT covers 2D drafting. Both come from Autodesk, so the choice is about the work you deliver, not the brand.

These two get compared because they share a maker and a lot of searchers assume one replaces the other. They don't. I read Autodesk's Fusion overview and personal-use pages and its AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT pages to set out what each one is for.

The rules on Autodesk's free Fusion licence

Many people search this pair because they've heard Fusion is free. It's free in one form only. Fusion for personal use is a limited version for personal, non-commercial projects, restricted to individuals under a small annual revenue limit in Autodesk's terms, and it isn't allowed for primary employment, company environments or commercial training. It also limits CAM, electronics and PCB work, 2D drawings and file import and export, and support is forum only. If you're designing for clients, you'll need a paid Fusion licence or the full trial.

What Fusion does that AutoCAD doesn't

Fusion is a product development tool. You model a part in 3D, set up the CAM side to machine it, design the circuit board that goes inside it and collaborate with your team in real time, all in one cloud workspace. Autodesk also sells Fusion for Manufacturing for shops that want advanced CAM, high-precision machining and CAD in one environment, so the handoff from design to production doesn't break. Autodesk's pitch to shops is that they stop juggling separate CAD and CAM licences and work from one source of truth in the cloud.

What AutoCAD does that Fusion doesn't

AutoCAD is built around DWG drawings. AutoCAD 2027 covers 2D and 3D drafting with Autodesk AI tools for routine tasks, opens DWG files on desktop, web and mobile, and now includes Forma Data Management Essentials with every standalone subscription, so several people can mark up the same drawing. If your work is 2D only, AutoCAD LT is the lighter option, built for precise 2D drafting and documentation. Autodesk says it's used by architects, engineers, construction professionals and designers who need precise 2D geometry and a full set of editing, design and annotation tools.

Pick by the deliverable you hand over

  • Machined or 3D-printed parts: Fusion.
  • Floor plans, site plans and construction drawings: AutoCAD.
  • Circuit boards inside a product: Fusion.
  • Precise 2D documentation only: AutoCAD LT.
  • Home projects with no commercial use: Fusion for personal use.

My advice on Fusion 360 or AutoCAD

Choose Fusion if you design physical products and want CAD, CAM and electronics in one place. Choose AutoCAD if you produce drawings for buildings, sites or installations and swap DWG files with other firms. If you're a hobbyist, start with Fusion for personal use, but read Autodesk's terms first, because commercial work isn't allowed on it and a client job could put you in breach.

Is Fusion 360 now called Fusion?

Autodesk's pages now call the product Autodesk Fusion, though the web address still uses fusion-360.

Can AutoCAD do 3D?

Yes. Autodesk describes AutoCAD 2027 as 2D and 3D drafting software. AutoCAD LT is the version built for 2D drafting.

Does Fusion do CAM?

Yes. Fusion includes integrated CAD and CAM, and Fusion for Manufacturing adds advanced CAM for production teams.

Can I use Fusion for personal use for a side business?

No. Autodesk limits it to personal, non-commercial projects and bars primary employment, company environments and commercial training.

Does AutoCAD include collaboration tools?

Yes. Forma Data Management Essentials is now included with every standalone AutoCAD subscription, with multi-user markups across desktop or web.

Which suits architects?

Autodesk says AutoCAD LT is used by architects, engineers, construction professionals and designers for drafting and documentation. Fusion is aimed at product design and manufacturing.
