Free Mood Board Makers (2026): 10 Tools Compared

A mood board maker lets you collect images, colours, fonts and notes on one visual board, so you can see a feeling or direction before you design anything. Some are design tools with templates, some are team whiteboards and some are AI generators that build a board for you. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Words like modern, warm or premium mean something different to everyone. A mood board settles that argument in one look, which is why designers, brand owners, brides and interior lovers all make them.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're briefing a designer, my ad creative brief template gives your board the words to go with it.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

A mood board is private until you publish it

The Intellectual Property Office says photographs, illustrations and other images will generally be protected by copyright as artistic works. That means you'll usually need the copyright owner's permission if you want to copy an image or share it on the internet.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Most mood boards are built from other people's photos, and that's normal while the board is a private reference for you, your team or your designer. The line is crossed when the board goes public: posted on your website, shared on social media or printed in a pitch deck you publish. Before that happens, swap the borrowed images for your own photos, licensed stock or images you've created yourself.

Design tool, whiteboard or AI board?

A design tool gives you neat templates and makes the board look finished. It suits brand owners and anyone presenting the board to a client.

A whiteboard is built for teams. People add images, comments and sticky notes together, so it works well for workshops and campaign planning.

An AI board generates images or a full layout from a style you choose. It's fast for exploring directions, but you'll still want real references before a final decision.

Six questions to ask before you start a board

  1. What's the one feeling the board should get across?
  2. Who needs to see it, and will they comment on it?
  3. Do you need colours and fonts as well as images?
  4. Will the board stay private or be published?
  5. Can you export it as an image or PDF?
  6. Where will you keep the source of each image?

Signs your mood board needs editing

  • It has more than twenty images. Cut it down.
  • Every colour is on it. Pick three.
  • Nobody can say what it means. Add three words.
  • It's about to go public. Swap borrowed images.

My plain advice on a mood board that guides decisions

Limit yourself to nine images and three colours. A board with fifty pictures shows everything you like, but it doesn't show a direction, and designers can't work from that. Cutting it down forces the choices that the board is there to make. Add two or three words underneath that sum up the feeling.

If you save inspiration on social platforms, my guide on how to make a secret board keeps a work in progress private.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mood board maker?

It's a tool for collecting images, colours, fonts and notes on one visual board to show a feeling or direction before you design.

Are mood board makers free?

Many have a free version, free templates or a free account. Check the free plan column above, then confirm on each vendor's site.

For a private reference it's common. The Intellectual Property Office says copying or sharing images online usually needs the owner's permission.

Nine to twelve is usually enough to show a clear direction without the board turning into a scrapbook.

What should a brand mood board include?

Images, a short colour palette, font examples and two or three words that describe the feeling you're after.

Can AI make a mood board for me?

Yes. Some tools generate images or a full board from a style you choose, which is useful for exploring early ideas.
