Free electronic signature software lets you send documents for signature, sign forms yourself and keep a record of who signed and when. Free plans usually limit how many documents you can send each month, while open-source tools can remove that limit if you host them. Electronic signatures are valid for most business contracts, but the law excludes some documents.
Printing, signing, scanning and emailing a contract back is still how a surprising number of small businesses work. It slows deals down and loses paperwork. A free e-signature tool fixes that in an afternoon.
Below are ten free electronic signature tools in no particular order, sorted alphabetically, from small open-source projects to well-known names. Each description comes from the tool's own website, re-checked today. If you send proposals before contracts, my guide to the best proposal software covers that first step.
Decide whether you mostly sign or mostly send. Signing a document yourself is free almost everywhere, while sending documents for others to sign is where free plans set their limits.
Free e-signature tools at a glance
In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site describes a free plan or free use, Trial only means a time-limited trial, and No means neither is stated. Free plans usually limit documents per month.

The documents the law excludes
Here's what many people don't realise. The US ESIGN Act gives electronic signatures legal effect for most contracts, but section 7003 says it doesn't apply to records governed by laws on wills, codicils and testamentary trusts, or on adoption, divorce and other family law matters, plus parts of the Uniform Commercial Code.
So e-sign your client contracts, proposals and supplier agreements with confidence, but don't use an e-signature tool for a will or family law paperwork. Rules differ outside the US, so check local guidance if you work across borders.
What a good free plan should include
- Audit trail: a record of who signed, when and from where.
- Templates: reusable contracts so you're not starting from scratch.
- Reminders: automatic nudges for unsigned documents.
- Signed copies: a completed PDF sent to every signer.
- Storage: a clear place to find signed documents later.
Sending your first contract for signature
- Upload the final version of the contract as a PDF.
- Add signature, date and initial fields where needed.
- Enter each signer's name and email in the right order.
- Send it, with a short personal note.
- Download and file the signed copy and audit trail.
Contract habits that save headaches
- Name the version: include a date in the file name.
- Send the final draft only: no tracked changes or comments.
- Set a signing order: your signature last, after the client signs.
- Follow up once: a friendly reminder after two days.
When it's time to renew, my annual contract negotiation swipe file gives you the wording for those conversations.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Keep a simple spreadsheet of contracts too, with signing dates and renewal dates. It turns e-signatures from a filing system into a reminder system.
Do you make e-signature software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on free e-signature tools
Use e-signatures for every routine contract. It speeds up the start of work, removes the excuse that the paperwork got lost, and makes you look organised.
And keep the signed copies somewhere you control, not only inside the e-signature tool. If you change providers, you'll still want every contract to hand.
Frequently asked questions
Are electronic signatures legally binding?
For most business contracts, yes. US law excludes some documents such as wills and family law matters.
Is there free e-signature software?
Yes. Several tools offer free plans, and open-source tools can be hosted for free.
Can I sign a PDF for free?
Yes. Free PDF readers and online tools let you add your own signature to a PDF.
How many documents can I send on a free plan?
It varies by tool, and most free plans limit documents per month.
What is an audit trail?
It's a record of who viewed and signed a document, and when, which helps prove the signature is valid.
Can I use e-signatures for a will?
Not under the US ESIGN Act, which excludes wills, codicils and testamentary trusts.
Do signers need an account?
Usually not. Most tools let signers sign from an email link.

Often yes for business contracts, as long as the signer intended to sign.
What's the difference between electronic and digital signatures?
Digital signatures use certificates to verify identity, while electronic signatures cover any electronic mark of agreement.
Can I e-sign on my phone?
Yes. Most tools work in a mobile browser, so you can sign with your finger in a couple of minutes.
Can I add my company logo?
Many tools let you brand the signing page and emails, though some keep that for upgraded plans.
