Free Domino Games: 10 Android Apps for Draw, Block and All Fives

Free domino games on Android cover three styles: classic dominoes against the computer, online matches against real players and puzzle games built around tiles. Dominoes: Classic Dominos Game from Loop Games has the most installs here, and two listings clearly say they play offline. Pick by whether you want quiet solo games or live opponents.

Dominoes is one of those games almost everyone has played at a kitchen table or on holiday, usually against a grandparent who knew exactly what they were doing. On a phone it keeps the same simple pleasure of matching ends, with a computer opponent who never loses a tile under the sofa.

I checked the Google Play page for each game below and recorded the developer, install count, the ads and in-app purchases labels, and any lines about offline play or needing a connection. This is a list, not a ranking, so the order means nothing.

Some of these are for playing alone, some only make sense online, and one is a puzzle adventure that borrows dominoes as its theme. The table makes the split easy to see.

The ten domino apps

Dominoes: Classic Dominos Game

Loop Games' app has more than 100M installs and offers three popular modes, according to its listing: Draw, Block and All Fives. The description explains each one, which helps if you only know one set of house rules.

Domino - Dominos online game

Built around real-time online matches for 2, 3 or 4 players, with leagues, statistics and leaderboards. Its listing says the controls are simple, but you'll want a connection for live games.

Domino Dreams™

SuperPlay's game is a relaxing puzzle adventure with colourful boards rather than a straight domino match. It shows no Contains ads label, though it has in-app purchases.

Domino Legends: Classic Game

Bluetile's game focuses on online multiplayer, where you play and compete with people around the world, according to its listing. There's no offline wording on its page.

Dominoes - Offline Domino Game

SNG Games puts offline play in the name, and the listing confirms an offline mode with computer opponents at different levels. It's a two-player game and has no in-app purchases label.

Classic Dominoes: Dominos Game

Big Cake's classic version is pitched at relaxed players, especially seniors and adults. Its listing mentions detailed tutorials that help beginners learn.

Domino! Multiplayer Dominoes

Flyclops LLC offers Fives, Block and Draw dominoes against friends. The listing calls it easy to learn but hard to master, and it doesn't mention offline play.

Domino Go - Online Board Game

Beach Bum's online board game adds what its listing calls thrilling twists to classic dominoes, with games you can share with friends. Its page doesn't mention offline play.

Dominoes - classic domino game

A classic game from Only 1% with a tutorial for beginners, team play for 2, 3 or 4 players and three modes: Classic, All Fives and Block. Its listing doesn't mention offline play.

Domino Rivals - Board game

ZiMAD's second domino game is an online multiplayer title where you challenge real opponents in competitive matches. It's the smallest here, with more than 500K installs.

Draw, Block and All Fives explained

  • Draw: match a tile to either open end. If you can't, you take a tile from the boneyard.
  • Block: the same idea with no boneyard. If you can't play, you pass.
  • All Fives: after each play, add up the pips on the open ends. A multiple of five scores points.

Block is the quickest to learn and the most tactical. Draw is gentler, because you're rarely stuck. All Fives turns dominoes into a little bit of mental arithmetic, which is why it's so popular with people who enjoy counting games.

Work with me

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Playing alone or against real people

Offline domino games let you play at your own pace, with the computer taking its turn instantly. They're ideal for short breaks, and you never wait for a stranger to make a move. Two listings here, from SNG Games and Big Cake, clearly say they play without a connection.

Online games are livelier but less predictable. You'll meet players of every level, some of them very fast, and a dropped signal can end a game early. If you like leaderboards and leagues, the ZiMAD, Bluetile, Flyclops and Beach Bum apps are built for that.

Tactics for winning more domino rounds

  1. Play your heavy tiles early, so you're not caught holding high pips at the end.
  2. Keep a spread of numbers in your hand, so you're harder to block.
  3. Notice which numbers your opponent can't match, then play to those ends.
  4. In All Fives, look for plays that leave the ends adding up to a multiple of five.
  5. Hold a double back when it could block a number your opponent needs.

A word on adverts and shops

Nine of the ten listings show a Contains ads label, and nine have in-app purchases. Domino rounds are quick, so adverts between them can come round often. If you're setting a game up for an older relative, sit with them for the first few rounds and show them how to close an advert without tapping into it.

From the phone to the table

Dominoes sits happily alongside the other family classics. My guide to classic board games for every age has more timeless games for a family evening, and if you'd rather everyone wins or loses together, try these cooperative board games.

And if you like playing traditional games on a phone with someone in the same room, here's how board games on your phone work, from official apps to pass-and-play.

Where to begin with dominoes

If you're new, start offline with Big Cake's or SNG's game and learn Block or Draw against the computer. Once you're comfortable, try All Fives, then step into an online game when you want a real opponent. The tiles are simple. The thinking is what keeps you playing.
