You can play bridge free on your phone with apps that pair you with a computer partner or match you with real players online. Several apps on this list say on Google Play that they play offline against the computer, which is ideal for practice. Choose an offline app to practise bidding and an online one when you want human partners.
Bridge is one of the great card games, and one of the hardest to organise. You need four people, a table and an evening free. A phone app solves that, because a computer partner is always ready to play.
I went through the Google Play listings of the most-installed bridge apps and noted the facts that matter: who makes each one, how many installs it has, whether it shows ads or in-app purchases, and what the listing says about offline play. They're listed in no particular order.

The eight bridge apps, one by one
NeuralPlay Bridge
A strong all-rounder with more than 1M installs on Google Play. It's a good fit if you want to practise bidding and play against computer opponents on the train.
Bridge V+
From ZingMagic, with more than 5M installs, the biggest number in this list. Its listing explains that you play offline with a computer partner, so it suits solo practice.
Classic Bridge Card Game
A traditional take on the game from Coppercod. Good for players who want a familiar table layout and no fuss.
Bridge - Card Game (Topy Games)
Pitched at people learning as well as regular players, with more than 500K installs. Handy if you're still getting to grips with bidding.
Fun Bridge
A well-known name among club players, with more than 500K installs. It shows an in-app purchases label but no Contains ads label on Google Play.
BBO Bridge Base Online
The app for Bridge Base Online, where people play real opponents online. Pick this one if you want human partners rather than the computer.
Tricky Bridge: Learn & Play
Built around learning as you play, with no Contains ads label on its listing. A friendly start if the rules still feel daunting.
Bridge Champ: Bridge Card Game
A smaller app with no Contains ads label and no in-app purchases label on Google Play. Worth a look if you'd rather not see adverts or a shop.
Offline bridge or online bridge?
Offline apps put you at a table with computer players, so you can practise bidding and play of the hand anywhere, even on a plane. Online apps match you with real people, which is closer to club bridge but needs a connection every time.
Many keen players use both. They practise against the computer on the commute and play real people in the evening. If you're learning, offline practice is less pressured, because the computer doesn't mind how long you think.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Getting started with bridge on a phone
- Install one offline app and play a few hands against the computer.
- Turn on any hints or bidding help while you learn.
- Play a hand in airplane mode to check it works offline.
- Switch hints off once you're comfortable.
- Try an online app when you're ready for human opponents.
Things that make a bridge app pleasant to use
- Readable cards: large enough to see on a small screen.
- Bidding help: useful while you learn the conventions.
- Undo or replay: great for seeing where a hand went wrong.
- Ads: check the Contains ads label if adverts bother you.
- Offline play: look for clear wording on the listing.
Bridge and other card games for two or four
Bridge needs four players, but plenty of great card games work with two. If you're looking for something to play with a partner, my guide to card games for two players has lots of ideas. And if you're stuck somewhere with time on your hands, here are games to play in hospital that need no fuss.
Why bridge suits a phone so well
Bridge rewards practice more than almost any other card game, and that's where an app shines. You can replay a hand you got wrong, try a different bid and see what would've happened, which isn't something your bridge club will let you do mid-evening. It's also a gentle way back in if you haven't played for years, because the computer won't sigh when you forget a convention.
If you're teaching a partner, an offline app is a lovely shared project. Sit together, play the same hand and talk through the bidding. You'll both learn faster than you would from a book, and you don't need to find another couple to make up the table.
My take on free bridge apps
If you want to practise, start with an app that says it plays offline against the computer. If you miss real opponents, add an online app later. Either way, a bridge app is the easiest way to keep your game sharp between club nights.
