A free AI hairstyle generator lets you see a new cut or colour on your own face before you sit in the salon chair. Look at how realistic the results are, how many styles are free, and what happens to your photo after you upload it. Nine tools follow in no particular order, plus tips for a photo that gives honest results.
Changing your hair is a big decision, and it's hard to picture a bob, a fringe or a new colour on yourself. AI hairstyle tools take a selfie and redraw your hair, which can make the choice much easier, or at least start a useful conversation with your hairdresser.
The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from big photo apps to small web tools. Each description comes from the tool's own website or store listing, re-checked today. If you run a salon, my notes on AI for hair salons and barbers cover how clients are using tools like these.
AI hairstyle tools at a glance
In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site or store listing describes free use, a free version or a free app, Trial only means a time-limited trial and No means neither is stated. Free versions often limit the number of styles, add a watermark or lower the resolution.

Your face is personal data
Before you upload a selfie, it's worth knowing how the law sees it. The ICO says UK GDPR gives special category data extra protection, and that includes biometric data where it's used for identification purposes.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
What that means for you: a clear photo of your face isn't just a picture. Read how long the tool keeps uploads, whether it uses them to train its models and how to delete them, and skip tools that don't say.
Web tools, photo apps and beauty cameras
Web tools let you upload a photo in a browser, pick a style and download the result, which is quick for a few looks and doesn't need an app on your phone. Photo editing apps put hairstyles alongside other edits, so you can try a cut and then tidy the lighting. Beauty camera apps work live through the camera, showing a new colour as you move, which gives a better sense of how it looks from different angles.
Generators that sell packs of dozens of styles made from a set of selfies are a different kind of service, aimed at people planning a big change.
Getting a realistic preview
- Use a recent, well-lit photo facing the camera.
- Pull your current hair back from your face if you can.
- Try two or three styles close to what you're considering.
- Look at the results on a big screen, not just your phone.
- Save the best one to show your hairdresser.
- Delete your uploads from the tool when you're done.
Before you book the appointment
- Think about upkeep. A sharp cut or a bright colour can mean more salon visits.
- Check your hair type. Fine, thick and curly hair behave very differently from an AI drawing.
- Try photo prompts too. My guide to fun prompts and photo edits covers other ways to play with your pictures.
- Take photos from several angles. The back and sides matter as much as the front.
Do you make an AI hairstyle tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on using an AI hairstyle generator
Use a free tool to narrow down two or three looks, not to make the final decision. AI is good at showing length and colour, and less reliable at showing how your hair's texture will behave, especially if your hair is curly or very fine, so ask your hairdresser what's realistic for you.
Take the saved images to your hairdresser and talk them through. And be choosy about where you upload your face; a tool that explains clearly what it does with your photo is worth more than one with an extra fringe option.
Frequently asked questions
Can I try hairstyles on my photo for free?
Yes. Several tools here offer free styles, often with a limit, a watermark or lower resolution.
How realistic are AI hairstyles?
They're good for length, shape and colour, but less accurate with texture, curls and how hair falls in real life.
Is it safe to upload my selfie?
Check each tool's privacy policy. The ICO treats biometric data used for identification as special category data with extra protection.
Can AI show me a new hair colour?
Yes. Most tools here can preview colours as well as cuts, and some do it live through the camera.
Do I need to sign up?
Some web tools work without an account; apps usually need one to save your results.
Should I show my hairdresser the AI picture?
Yes. It's a useful starting point, as long as you both treat it as a guide rather than a promise.
