Facebook Pixel Helper Is Now Meta Ads Data Advisor: What Changed

The Facebook Pixel Helper is now called Meta Ads Data Advisor. It's still a free browser extension for Chrome and Edge that shows whether a Meta Pixel is on a web page and which events it fires, but Meta has added automated setup and fix tools. If you had Pixel Helper installed, it updates to Data Advisor automatically and the old checks still work.

Meta's developer page for the tool was updated on 6 October 2026, and the name change is why so many people are searching for an extension they can't find in the store any more. Same job, new name, a lot more ambition.

What Meta Ads Data Advisor does

The core job hasn't changed. You visit a web page, click the icon, and it tells you whether a Meta Pixel loaded and which events fired. A small badge on the icon shows a dot or a number for the events fired on that page. No badge means no pixel on the page.

What's new is everything around that check. According to Meta, Data Advisor can now:

  • Set up the Meta Pixel and Conversions API together through Google Tag Manager, including standard events.
  • Connect a Shopify store or WooCommerce site to Meta, including the pixel, Conversions API and catalog.
  • Bring Salesforce or HubSpot CRM data into Meta through the Conversions API.
  • Flag broken events and missing parameters, then apply fixes with your approval.
  • Keep watching your setup and alert you when something goes wrong.
  • Produce a summary report of every automated action, with screenshots.

How to install it

Here are the Chrome steps from Meta's page. Edge works the same way through the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store, where you click Get instead.

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store and search for Meta Ads Data Advisor.
  2. Click Add to Chrome and read the permission list before you accept.
  3. Click Add extension in the pop-up.
  4. Optionally log in with your Facebook profile to get recommendations and automated setup.
  5. Pin the extension so the event count stays visible as you browse.

If you still have an old, deactivated Meta Pixel Helper, go to chrome://extensions, find it (it'll now be listed as Meta Ads Data Advisor), switch it back on and accept the updated permissions. Reload any open pages afterwards.

The permissions worth reading twice

This is the part I'd flag to any client. The new extension asks for three permissions, and Meta's own wording explains why:

PermissionMeta's stated reasonWhat it means for you
Access the page debugger backendLets AI view the current page content and navigate websites reliablyThe extension can read and move through pages for you
Read and change all your data on all websitesLets Meta operate on third-party sites on your behalfIt can act inside tools like Tag Manager or Shopify when you approve a job
View and manage your tab groupsOrganises tabs created during automation for audit reviewIt opens and groups tabs while it works

Those are broad rights for a browser extension. You can use it logged out, and Meta says basic pixel detection and troubleshooting still work that way. If all you want is a quick check that a pixel fires, that's the low-risk route. Only log in and grant admin-level jobs when you're ready to let it change your setup.

How to check your pixel is working

  1. Go to the page where your pixel should be installed.
  2. Turn off your ad blocker for that site, or the extension can't see the pixel.
  3. Click the Data Advisor icon to open the side panel.
  4. Do the action you want to test, such as adding a product to your basket.
  5. Select the pixel and confirm the expected event shows as successful.
  6. If you see a warning or error, follow the suggested fix.

Click Show all events to see every event across your browsing session, not just the current page. That's the one to use when you're testing a checkout that runs over several pages.

What each status means

StatusOn a pixelOn an event
ActiveWorking correctlyBeing sent correctly
WarningNot set up correctlyOne or more issues that may affect performance
InactiveNot sending events correctlyNot sending data right now
ErrorNot usedCritical problem, such as blocked parameters, duplicate events or a compliance issue
Auto-detectedNot usedFound from your site activity without extra code

Meta adds a helpful warning: a pixel can show Active while individual events have warnings, and a pixel can show Warning while events still send. Always click into the pixel and read each event.

The automatic events switch to check

From 3 August 2026, when you set up a new pixel through Data Advisor, the option to detect and add standard events automatically is ticked by default. Meta then suggests events such as Purchase, Lead or AddToCart from your site activity. You can untick it during setup, or turn it off later in Events Manager. If you like to approve every event yourself, untick it before you finish.

Once the extension says your pixel fires, the next stop is Events Manager to see what Meta receives over time. My guide to conversion tracking for Meta ads covers the pixel and Conversions API side, and if your setup runs through Tag Manager, my explainer on Google Tag Manager versus Google Analytics clears up which tool does what.

My verdict

Install it, but use it logged out for checking and only log in when you want it to do setup work. As a pixel checker it's the same handy tool it always was. As an automation agent with permission to act on any website, it deserves the same care you'd give a new team member with admin access: useful, but watched. And untick the automatic events option if you want to know exactly what's being sent to Meta.

Another angle on tracking is my guide to the Meta Conversions API.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to the Facebook Pixel Helper?

Meta renamed it Meta Ads Data Advisor. If you had Pixel Helper installed, it updates automatically and all the existing diagnostic features continue to work.

Is Meta Ads Data Advisor free?

Yes. Meta describes it as a free browser extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Do I need to log in to use it?

No. Meta says basic pixel detection and troubleshooting work while you're logged out. You need a Facebook profile and ad account admin access for the setup and automation features.

Why does Data Advisor show no pixel on my site?

If the icon has no badge, no Meta Pixel was found on that page. Turn off your ad blocker for the site, reload the page and check again.
