Does Snapchat Still Have Shazam? What the Official Pages Say

I can't confirm it. Snapchat's current help pages don't describe a Shazam feature, and Shazam isn't on its list of integration partners. If you need a song name, use Shazam or Music Recognition on your phone.

Lots of people remember holding their finger on the Snapchat camera to find out what song was playing. If you've gone looking for it and found nothing, you're not imagining things, and it's a fair question whether the feature is still there.

I want to be straight with you: going by what Snapchat and Shazam say officially, the answer isn't a clean yes or no. Here's what I could and couldn't confirm, and what works either way.

What Snapchat's own help pages say about Shazam

Snapchat's help centre has an article listing its integration partners and the features they provide. It names Apple Maps, Google Maps, iTranslate, Linkfire, Lyft, OpenTable, Resy, Spotify, Strava, The Infatuation, Ticketmaster, TripAdvisor and Uber. Shazam isn't on that list.

I couldn't find a Snapchat help article that gives steps for identifying a song from the camera. That doesn't prove the feature is gone for everyone, since menus can vary by app version and region. It does mean I can't give you steps and promise they'll work.

What the Shazam side says about Snapchat

There used to be a Shazam help page called Shazam and Snapchat. That address now shows Apple's general page about identifying what song is playing on Apple devices, with no Snapchat steps on it. Apple owns Shazam, and that page is where the official instructions now live.

You'll find blog posts online that still describe a press-and-hold gesture on the camera screen, and others that say it's been removed. They disagree, and none are from Snapchat or Apple, so I wouldn't rely on them.

Trying the Shazam gesture in Snapchat yourself

If you want to check your own app, you can look without changing anything. Open the Camera screen, and look at the icons and options that appear there. If you see a music recognition option, then it's available on your version. If you don't, it isn't something Snapchat documents, so move on to the options below.

I'd avoid downloading anything from a website that claims to add Shazam to Snapchat. Stick with the apps from your phone's own store.

Identifying a song on iPhone without Snapchat

Apple says Shazam Music Recognition is built into iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. To use it quickly, add the control to Control Center:

  1. Open Control Center on your iPhone, then tap the Add Controls button at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Add a Control, then choose Recognize Music.
  3. To identify a song, open Control Center and tap the Recognize Music button.
  4. To see songs you've identified, touch and hold the Recognize Music button, then tap History.

Apple adds that if you have the Shazam app installed, your Library there lists the songs found with Music Recognition and lets you connect to a music service to listen.

Identifying a song on Android without Snapchat

Apple's help for Android says to open the Shazam app and tap the Shazam button. You can also touch and hold the Shazam app in the app drawer and tap Shazam Now. Apple says Auto Shazam can identify what's playing around you, even when you switch to another app, and that Shazam never saves or stores what it hears.

Adding music to a Snap, which Snapchat does document

What Snapchat's help centre does cover is adding a sound you already know. It uses the Sounds tool:

  1. Take or open your Snap and tap the Sounds icon.
  2. Browse tabs such as For You, Saved, Recents, Trending or My Sounds, or search for artists and sounds.
  3. Tap a sound to preview it, and tap it again to remove it.
  4. Use the trim icon to change where the song starts, then tap Done.

Snapchat also says you can create your own sound by recording from the microphone, and that Linkfire can take you to your preferred music streaming platform to hear a full song when you view a Story with a featured sound. And Spotify can be linked to share your currently playing music on the Snap Map.

Why the answer matters if you post video for work

If you share clips for a business or a side project, the song matters more than you'd think. A track you can't name is a track you can't credit, search for or reuse. That's why I'd rather you had a method that works on any phone than one that depends on a gesture Snapchat doesn't document.

A simple routine helps. When you hear something you like, identify it straight away, jot down the title and artist in a notes app, and search for the title inside Snapchat's Sounds tool later. Snapchat says sounds can be saved with the bookmark icon, so a song you've found once is easy to find again.

Shazam, Snapchat and creators posting music

If you make video for your business or a side project, the question is usually which song is in a clip you saw. Identify it with Music Recognition or Shazam first, then find it in the Sounds tool by searching its name. If it isn't there, pick something similar rather than hunting for a workaround. For other camera tricks, my guide to doing a boomerang on Snapchat is a good next step, and sending a voice message on Snapchat covers spoken audio.

If Shazam isn't working in Snapchat for you

  1. Update Snapchat to the newest version.
  2. Check Snapchat's help centre for any article that mentions Shazam; if none does, treat the feature as unavailable.
  3. Use Music Recognition on iPhone or the Shazam app on Android instead.
  4. Search by lyrics or the Sounds tool if you only half remember the song.
