Descript Review: Media Hours, AI Credits and the Free Plan Catch

Descript is a video and audio editor you drive by editing the transcript, and it suits podcasters, YouTubers and small teams. The catch is the free plan: 60 media minutes a month and 100 AI credits that are one-time, not monthly, as of Oct 2026, so it's a test drive rather than a plan you can run a show on.

Descript's whole pitch is text-based editing: you change the words in the transcript and the recording follows. I read Descript's pricing page and its plan comparison table, and what decides whether it works for you isn't the editing idea, it's how the plans are measured. Everything is sized in media hours and AI credits, per editor, per month.

Descript plans, hours and credits side by side

PlanPrice (dollars per person per month)What's includedThe limit that bites
Free0 dollarsText-based editing and a chance to give the AI tools a spin60 media minutes (1 hour) a month; 100 AI credits, one-time
Hobbyist16 dollars on annual billing, 24 dollars on monthly billing1 person; 1080p export, watermark-free; access to Underlord, the AI video co-editor; AI tools including Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month
Creator24 dollars on annual billing, 35 dollars on monthly billingScale to a team of 3 (billed separately); 4k export, watermark-free; full access to Underlord and 20+ more AI tools; video generation with the latest AI models30 media hours and 800 AI credits a month
Business50 dollars on annual billing, 65 dollars on monthly billingScale to a team of 5 (billed separately); team-wide Brand Studio; translate and dub video in 30+ languages40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits a month

Prices are per person per month in dollars, as of Oct 2026. The lower figure in each pair is the annual-billing view; the page's toggle says "Saving up to 35% over monthly plan". Check the vendor's pricing page before you buy.

Descript's free AI credits don't come back

The free plan costs 0 dollars and invites you to "give our AI tools a spin". I'd read it exactly that way. In the comparison table, Free gets 60 minutes (1 hr) of media a month. That's the number of minutes of imported or recorded media processed in Descript, per editor, so an hour-long interview uses the lot.

The AI credits are where people get caught. Free lists 100 AI credits marked one-time. Every paid plan lists credits per month instead: 400 on Hobbyist, 800 on Creator and 1,500 on Business. So your free media minutes come back each month, but your free AI credits don't. Once they're spent, they're spent, and that's worth knowing before you lean on the AI tools during your first week.

The second thing to watch is that time is counted per editor. The table lists 600 minutes (10 hrs) a month on Hobbyist, 1800 minutes (30 hrs) on Creator and 2400 minutes (40 hrs) on Business. Creator can scale to a team of 3 and Business to a team of 5, and both say the extra people are billed separately. If a show runs long, the page also offers top-ups for media minutes and AI credits.

The third is export quality. Hobbyist exports 1080p, watermark-free. Creator is the plan that lists 4k, watermark-free. If you publish in 4k, Hobbyist won't cover it, however few hours you edit.

What you can do in Descript

Going only by what the pricing page lists, here's what you get across the plans:

  • Text-based editing of video and audio, on every plan including Free.
  • Underlord, which Descript calls its AI video co-editor: access on Hobbyist, full access on Creator.
  • AI tools including Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words from Hobbyist, with 20+ more on Creator.
  • Generating video with the latest AI models on Creator.
  • Multi-language transcription in 25 languages.
  • Translating and dubbing video in 30+ languages, plus team-wide Brand Studio, on Business.

If transcripts are the main job and editing is secondary, I've compared options in my roundup of AI transcription software. And if you mainly want to cut short clips for social without paying yet, my list of free AI video editors for small businesses is the place to start.

Who Descript fits, and who it doesn't

Descript makes sense if:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • You're a podcaster, YouTuber or small team who'd rather edit a transcript than a timeline.
  • You can size your month in media hours and AI credits, and you know roughly how much you record.
  • You want watermark-free exports, at 1080p on Hobbyist or 4k on Creator.

I'd hold off if:

  • You record hours of material every month and hope to stay on Free, which gives you 60 minutes.
  • You're counting on the free AI credits renewing. The 100 are one-time.

If one moment from a recording deserves its own loop, compare tools that convert video to GIF.

My advice on Descript

I'd treat the free plan as a way to see whether editing by transcript suits how you work, on one short recording. If it clicks, the plan choice is simple maths on your own month. Hobbyist covers 10 hours and 1080p, Creator covers 30 hours and 4k, and Business is for teams that need dubbing and shared brand settings. I'd skip it if you only edit once in a while and want AI help each time, because the free credits won't refill. And I'd pick annual billing only once you've seen a couple of months of real usage. Comparing it with a studio style recorder next? Then Descript against Riverside lays the two side by side.
