Culture Amp Alternatives: 10 Engagement and Review Tools

The best Culture Amp alternatives run engagement surveys, performance reviews and feedback without overwhelming your managers. Some are full people platforms, some focus on listening at scale and some are lightweight tools for small teams. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Culture Amp is well known for engagement surveys and performance reviews. Depending on your size and goals, though, you might want something simpler, something with recognition built in or something that sits inside the HR system you already use.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Each description comes from the tool's own site, read this week. If you're still choosing the wider HR setup, my comparison of employee engagement software is a useful companion read.

Why anonymous surveys aren't always anonymous

Here's the catch HR teams need to think about before sending any survey. The ICO says personal data is information that relates to an identified or identifiable individual, and that what identifies someone can be as simple as a name or a number.

In a small team, a survey comment or a filter by department can point to one person even when the survey says it's anonymous, so check how each tool hides small groups. Look for minimum group sizes in reports and clear settings for who can see open comments.

Listening platform or performance platform?

Listening platforms focus on surveys: engagement, pulse, onboarding and exit. Performance platforms focus on goals, check-ins, feedback and reviews. Many tools now do both, but each still has a centre of gravity, and that's usually where it's strongest.

If your biggest problem is that you don't know how people feel, start with listening. If you know how they feel but managers struggle to have good conversations, start with performance tools that give managers structure and prompts.

Running your first engagement survey

  1. Agree what you'll do with the results before you ask a single question.
  2. Keep the first survey short so people finish it.
  3. Tell everyone how anonymity works and who sees comments.
  4. Share headline results with the whole company within a few weeks.
  5. Ask each manager to pick one thing to improve with their team.
  6. Run a short pulse a few months later to check progress.

What good survey reports look like

  • Clear priorities. A few themes to work on, not fifty scores.
  • Manager views. Each manager sees results for their own team.
  • Comment themes. Open comments grouped so patterns are easy to spot.
  • Progress over time. A simple way to see whether actions worked.

Helping managers act on feedback

Most managers want to do right by their teams but don't know where to start. Give them a short guide, a template for sharing results with their team and one or two suggested actions. When people see something change after a survey, they answer the next one more honestly.

Recognition is part of engagement

Surveys tell you how people feel, but recognition changes how they feel. Some tools on this list combine surveys with peer recognition, so people can thank each other publicly for good work. In smaller teams, a simple habit of managers thanking people specifically and often can do as much as any platform. The tool should support good habits, not replace them.

Do you make an engagement or performance tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on Culture Amp alternatives

A survey is a promise. When you ask people for honest feedback, you're promising to listen and act. Choose a tool that makes acting easy, with clear reports for managers and simple action plans, rather than one that just produces more charts.

Size matters too. A team of twenty doesn't need the same platform as a company of five thousand, and an oversized tool can make feedback feel bureaucratic. For practical ideas on managing a small team well, see my guide on how to improve employee management for your SMB.

Frequently asked questions

What does Culture Amp do?

It's a people platform for engagement surveys, performance reviews, feedback and development.

Is there a free alternative to Culture Amp?

At least one tool on this list describes free use for very small teams. Check the free plan column in the table.

Are employee survey results personal data?

They can be. The ICO says personal data is information relating to an identified or identifiable individual, which small-group results can be.

How often should we run engagement surveys?

Many teams run a full survey once or twice a year with short pulse surveys in between.

Do small businesses need engagement software?

Not always. A short survey and regular one-to-ones may be enough until the team grows.

Can these tools run performance reviews too?

Many of them can, and some focus on reviews more than surveys, so check what each one is built around.
