Cozy games are relaxed, low-pressure games where you can't really lose. You farm, decorate, tidy, wander or look after little things at your own pace. Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Unpacking, A Little to the Left and A Short Hike are good places to start, and a few free cozy games run on any phone.
If you only want one suggestion today, pick by mood. Want a little world to look after? Try a farming or life sim. Want a calm half hour? Try a tidying puzzle. Tired, on the sofa, phone in hand? A cat-collecting game will do the job. Below are the cozy games I'd point a friend to, with who each one suits and where each one falls short.
What makes a game cozy
There's no official definition, but I think cozy games share three things.
- No harsh fail state. You can't lose in a way that throws you back to the start. Mistakes are small and easy to fix.
- A slow pace. Nothing chases you. You decide when to move on, and the music is usually soft.
- Gentle goals. You're growing crops, arranging a room or making friends with villagers, not racing a clock.
That doesn't mean these games are shallow. Plenty have real depth. They just don't punish you for taking your time. If you like the calm-puzzle side of things, I've covered it in my guide to relaxing puzzle games that aren't stressful.
Farming and life sims
These give you a place to settle into and a routine to enjoy. They're the classic cozy picks.
Stardew Valley
You inherit a run-down farm and slowly turn it into a home. You plant crops, look after animals, fish, mine and get to know the townspeople. It's on PC, consoles and phones, and it's a paid game. Best for: people who like long, steady progress. Main limit: there's always one more job to do, so a quick session can quietly turn into a long one.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
You move to a small island on the Nintendo Switch and shape it into your own town. You catch bugs and fish, decorate, and chat with animal neighbours. The game follows the real-world clock, so it suits a short visit each day. It's a paid game. Best for: people who love decorating and daily check-ins. Main limit: it's Switch only, and progress is slow on purpose.
Decorating and tidying games
If a messy room bothers you and an organised one makes you happy, this group is for you.
Unpacking
You unpack boxes and decide where each item goes, room after room. The story of one person's life shows up through their belongings, and nobody says a word. It's on PC and consoles, and it's paid. Best for: people who like order and quiet storytelling. Main limit: it's short, and the game has its own idea of where some things belong, which can feel fiddly.
A Little to the Left
A tidying puzzle game where you sort, stack and line up everyday objects. Each puzzle has more than one clever answer, so there's no single right way. It's on PC and Switch, and other versions may exist, so check your device's store. Best for: short, satisfying sessions. Main limit: if you want a story or something to build, this one stays small.
Short story games
A Short Hike
You play a small bird called Claire who climbs a mountain to find phone signal. You can glide, fish, chat with other hikers and wander off the path whenever you like. It's on PC and Switch, it's paid, and it's short enough for one afternoon. Best for: people who want a finished little story without a big time commitment. Main limit: once you reach the top, you're nearly done.
Free cozy games on your phone
You don't need a console or a gaming PC. These three are free to download, and they include ads or optional purchases, so check the in-app settings before you hand a phone to a child.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector. You put out food and toys in a little garden, and cats wander in. You mostly watch and collect. It suits a minute or two at a time.
- Cats & Soup. A relaxing idle game about cats, soup and a small world that grows while you're away. It suits people who like to check in and tap a few things.
- Good Pizza, Great Pizza. You run a pizza shop and make orders to match what each customer asks for. It's light, quick and low stress.
If you'd rather play in a browser, my guide to choosing an online puzzle game for relaxation covers what to look for. Whatever you pick, a shared device works better with a store password turned on, so nobody's tapping a purchase button by accident.

Cozy games for two
Cozy doesn't have to mean solo. A few of these work well side by side.
- Stardew Valley has farm co-op, so friends or a partner can share one farm and split the chores.
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons lets you visit each other's islands. Check what the Switch needs for online play before you plan an evening around it.
- Spiritfarer has a second-player mode, where the other person joins in as Daffodil the cat. It's a gentle boat-and-spirits game with some sad moments.
- Unpacking works as a pass-the-controller game. One person places, the other guesses whose room they're looking at.

Frequently asked questions
What is a cozy game?
A cozy game is a calm, low-pressure game with gentle goals and no harsh punishment for mistakes. Farming, decorating, tidying and wandering games are the usual examples.
Which cozy game should a beginner try first?
Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing: New Horizons suit people who want something to settle into. A Short Hike or Unpacking suit people who'd rather finish a small game in a sitting or two.
Are there free cozy games?
Yes. Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector, Cats & Soup and Good Pizza, Great Pizza are free to download on phones. They include ads or optional purchases, so check the settings first.
Do cozy games work without internet?
Many single-player ones do, but publishers change this, so test yours in airplane mode before a trip. Games with online features, like visiting someone's island, need a connection.
