Teams in ChatGPT are a feature inside ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces that groups the colleagues who work on the same projects, so you can share a page or a whole Space with them once instead of person by person. As of October 2026 a team can also run team tasks for recurring work, and it isn't a separate plan, a workspace group or Microsoft Teams.
If you searched for chatgpt teams looking for the paid plan for companies, that's a different thing. This page is about the Teams feature you find inside a Business or Enterprise workspace. OpenAI's own FAQ also has to point out that it has nothing to do with Microsoft Teams, which is a separate Microsoft app.
A team isn't a workspace, and it isn't a group
This is where most of the mix-ups happen, and it matters because it decides who can see what. Teams are only in Business and Enterprise workspaces, and your workspace settings and permissions decide what you can do with them.
| Thing | What it covers | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace | Your organisation's members, settings and admin controls | Workspace admins |
| Workspace group | A way to organise members, share resources and assign custom roles; can sync from an identity provider | Admins |
| Team | A shared membership for working together on pages, Spaces and tasks | The team owner and members |
| Space | The content and context a team shares | Whoever shares it, under its own permissions |
Creating or joining a team doesn't make you a workspace admin, and team membership doesn't override workspace permissions. OpenAI's example: an admin uses a group to give a department access to a feature, then coworkers create a team to share project resources and run a recurring update.
Teams and Spaces work together
A team defines who works together, and a Space holds what they share. You can share several Spaces with one team, and one Space can include several teams. OpenAI gives three examples:
- A launch team across product, engineering, design, operations and marketing, sharing the launch Space and relevant pages.
- An account team of sales, solutions engineering and customer success, sharing account plans and handoff materials.
- A standing marketing or operations team sharing campaign briefs, research and planning Spaces across projects.
What each member can view or edit still depends on the sharing permissions of each page and Space. If you're used to ChatGPT projects, think of a team as the people layer and the Space as the content layer.
Team tasks, and the connection catch
Team tasks handle recurring work, such as a weekly project update or a customer-change digest. They run in the cloud, so the creator doesn't need to keep ChatGPT open, and authorised teammates can review results, update instructions and look after the task together, including runs from before they joined when permissions allow.
Here's the catch. Team tasks don't borrow anything personal from whoever made them. They use their saved instructions and the connections configured for the team, not the creator's personal connections, saved memories, custom instructions or chat history. And sharing a Space with the team doesn't automatically make all its content part of every task, so give each task the instructions and source references it needs. For more on scheduled work, see my guide to ChatGPT tasks.
Plugins follow the same rule. A plugin shared with a team can be used by members and by tasks, but sharing it doesn't share your personal app connection. The connected provider account decides what a task can reach, and members don't each need to connect the same account.
How to create a team and add people
- Open the Teams list and select Create team. If you don't have permission, ask your workspace admin.
- Enter a name and, if you like, a description, then select Create team. You become the team owner, and the team gets its own service account for running tasks in the cloud.
- Open the team, select Invite, search by name or email and select Add member or Add members.
- Or open the Invite options and select Copy link to share a join link.
- Share pages and Spaces with the team separately, checking each one's permissions.
Be careful with join links. Anyone in the same workspace can join by opening one, with no approval from the team owner, and the team's name and member list can be visible to them before they join. Before inviting anyone or sharing a link, review the team's existing tasks, run history and configured connections.
Who can do what
- Members can invite coworkers from the same workspace, remove members who aren't the owner, and manage tasks within their permissions.
- Only the team owner can delete the team, and the owner chooses which eligible workspace connections are enabled for it.
- Workspace admins manage workspace connections and decide who can use them. Being a team owner doesn't make you an admin.
- In Enterprise workspaces, role-based access control lets admins decide who can create teams and who can create or update team tasks.
- Teams only include people from the same workspace, and a join link doesn't invite anyone into the workspace itself.
Team membership can't be imported from workspace groups or from Slack or Microsoft Teams channels, and it doesn't sync. You add and remove members directly in ChatGPT.

Should your workspace use Teams?
I'd set up a team if the same handful of people keep sharing the same pages and Spaces, or if someone writes the same weekly update by hand, because a team task can take that over in the cloud. I'd hold back on join links in a large workspace until you've checked what the team's tasks and connections can reach. And I'd skip it entirely for one-off collaboration, because sharing a single page with a colleague is quicker. Frequently asked questions
What are Teams in ChatGPT?
A team brings together people in your workspace who work on the same projects, so you can share pages, Spaces and team tasks with them in one go.
Which plans have Teams?
Teams are available in ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces, as of October 2026.
What is the difference between a team and a workspace group?
Workspace groups help admins organise members, share resources and assign custom roles. A team is a shared membership for collaborating on pages, Spaces and tasks, and it doesn't override workspace permissions.
Can team tasks use my personal connections?
No. Team tasks use the connections configured for the team, not the creator's personal connections, memories, custom instructions or chat history.
Who can join with a link?
Any member of the same workspace who opens the join link, without separate approval from the team owner. A join link doesn't invite people into the workspace itself.
