No, Cash App isn't available in Canada: its terms say you must be a resident of the United States to open an account, and person-to-person payments only work in the US and UK. Canadians usually use Interac e-Transfer at home, and to receive money from the US, PayPal works because Venmo users can now pay PayPal accounts in Canada.
This question usually comes from Canadians whose American friends, clients or relatives all seem to live on Cash App. The short answer is that it won't work for you as an account holder, and trying to get round the rules is a quick way to lose money. Here are the routes that do work.
Can you use Cash App in Canada?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can a Canadian resident open a Cash App account? | No. Cash App's terms require US residency |
| Do Cash App payments work outside the US? | Person-to-person payments, adding and withdrawing money don't work outside the US or UK |
| Can an American use their Cash App Card in Canada? | Yes, as a card, with a 3% international use fee unless they have Cash App Green |
| Is Venmo available in Canada? | Not as an account; Venmo users can send to PayPal users in Canada |
The catch: don't borrow a US address
You'll find advice online about signing up with a friend's US address or a US phone number. Cash App's terms say users must be US residents, and Cash App says core features don't work outside the US or UK. Breaking the terms risks the account being closed with your money in it, and anyone offering to "set up" an account for you is likely running a scam. I wouldn't touch it.
What Canadians use instead
At home, Interac e-Transfer does the job most Americans use Cash App or Venmo for. It runs through your own bank's app: you enter the person's email or mobile number, the amount and, unless they've registered for Autodeposit, a security question. Interac also has a Request Money feature. If you're the one receiving, registering for Autodeposit means the money lands without the password step, which Interac describes as easier and more secure.
Getting paid by someone in the US
This is where it gets more useful. Venmo now lets its users send money to PayPal users in many countries, and Canada is on Venmo's list. So if your friend or client in the US uses Venmo, you can receive with a Canadian PayPal account.
| Venmo to a PayPal user in Canada | What Venmo says |
|---|---|
| How they find you | By the phone number on your PayPal account |
| Fee for the sender | 5.00% (min 0.99, max 4.99 dollars), plus 3.00% on a credit card |
| Currency conversion | Spread of 4.00% if you receive a different currency |
| Limits | 2,500 dollars per payment, 5,000 a day, 10,000 a week, 25,000 a month |
| Requests | Not possible across the two apps |
Because requests don't work across platforms, you'll need to ask them to send it, and make sure your PayPal account is visible to search by phone number.
Step by step: receive money from a US Venmo user
- Open or check your Canadian PayPal account and confirm the phone number on it.
- In PayPal's privacy settings, make sure people can find you by phone.
- Ask the sender to search your phone number in Venmo and send the payment.
- Check the fee and conversion with them before they send.
- Move the money from PayPal to your Canadian bank.
Paying people in Canada from the US
If you're the American trying to pay someone in Canada, the same logic applies in reverse. Cash App won't reach them. From Venmo you can send to their PayPal account by phone number, with the 5.00% international fee shown before you confirm. Bigger amounts may be cheaper through a dedicated money transfer service, so compare the fee and the exchange rate before you send anything large.
Watch out for 'Cash App Canada' scams
Because so many people search for this, scammers use it. Fake apps and social media accounts claim to offer Cash App for Canadians or to receive Cash App money on your behalf, usually asking for a fee or your banking login first. Cash App's own terms limit accounts to US residents, so any offer to get round that is a red flag. Never share passwords, PINs or one-time codes, and never pay a fee to release money someone has sent you.
Travelling to Canada with Cash App
For Americans visiting Canada, Cash App's card still works as a card in most countries, with a 3% international use fee. Cash App says customers with Cash App Green can have that fee waived on in-person card transactions, and one way to get Green is depositing 300 dollars or more in qualifying paychecks. But you can't send or receive Cash App payments from inside Canada, so plan ahead before the trip.

My verdict
Cash App simply isn't built for Canadians. Use Interac e-Transfer for anyone in Canada, and PayPal when the money comes from a US Venmo user. For the bigger picture on cross-border money, see Wise vs Revolut, PayPal vs Venmo and my Cash App safety check.
