Mostly, yes. Rockstar says GTA V Story Mode generally doesn't need an internet connection, and on PC you can force offline play with the -scofflineonly launch argument. GTA Online always needs the internet, and on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar says GTA Online is required to play Story Mode.
GTA V has been around long enough that most of the advice about it online is out of date. The details changed with the newer console versions and the Enhanced edition on PC, so I went straight to Rockstar's own support articles. Here's what they say, platform by platform.
GTA V offline: the quick table
| Platform | Story Mode offline? | Rockstar's note |
|---|---|---|
| PC (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic) | Yes, generally | Use the -scofflineonly launch argument to start offline |
| PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Needs GTA Online | GTA Online is required to play Story Mode on these consoles |
| GTA Online, any platform | No | Online by design |
| Saving to the Rockstar Cloud | No | You may need to connect to sync saves |
How to play GTA V offline on PC
Rockstar's support article gives exact steps for launching GTA V in offline mode for Story Mode play:
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher while you're online.
- Select Settings from the top navigation.
- Select Grand Theft Auto V from the left-hand sidebar.
- Under Launch Arguments, add -scofflineonly.
- Go back to Games and select Play, or start the game from the launcher you normally use.
When you want to go back online, for GTA Online, cloud saves or an update, Rockstar says to close the game, remove the launch argument and relaunch. Leaving it in place is the usual reason people can't get into Online later and don't know why.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S catch
This is the part most guides miss. Rockstar's support article says GTA Online is required to play GTA V Story Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It adds that if you got Story Mode while using GTA Online during a free trial, or through a membership service such as GTA+, Game Pass or PlayStation Plus, you'll need full GTA Online access again to resume your Story Mode progress.
In practice, that means current-generation console players shouldn't assume Story Mode works like it did on older consoles. If you're taking a console somewhere with no internet, check you can start Story Mode in that setup at home first, with the router unplugged, so you find out in your own living room rather than in a holiday let with no broadband.
What still needs the internet in GTA V
- GTA Online. Always online, on every platform.
- Rockstar Cloud saves. Rockstar says you may need to connect to sync progress.
- Updates. The game may ask to connect to make sure files are up to date.
- Activation. Rockstar notes some games or modes may need a connection for activation.
Getting GTA V ready for an offline trip on PC
GTA V is enormous. Steam lists a minimum of 105 GB of storage for the Enhanced edition and 125 GB for the Legacy edition, so if you're installing on a laptop before a trip, do it days ahead on a fast connection, not the night before. Then open the game once online, let it sync your save, add the launch argument and check Story Mode starts with the internet switched off.
If your laptop is more of a lightweight machine, GTA V may simply be too heavy. My list of offline games for lighter Windows laptops covers games that suit integrated graphics, and here's a guide to free games on Steam worth playing if you're filling a Steam library for the journey.
When GTA V still won't start offline on PC
- Check the argument is typed exactly. It's -scofflineonly, with the dash at the front and no spaces.
- Launch once online first. A brand-new install or an update that hasn't finished will want a connection, which is in line with Rockstar's note about keeping game files up to date.
- Look at which launcher starts it. Rockstar's steps say you can start the game from your preferred launcher after setting the argument in the Rockstar Games Launcher, so set it there even if you normally press Play in Steam or Epic.
- Let your save sync before you disconnect. Otherwise the save on this machine may be older than the one in the Rockstar Cloud.
GTA V offline and families
GTA V is an adult game, and a laptop on holiday tends to get shared. If you're setting it up for yourself, it's worth keeping it out of reach of younger children in the house. For something the whole family can play on one screen, Xbox co-op games for the sofa are a much better fit.

My take on GTA 5 offline
On PC, GTA V Story Mode is offline-friendly, and Rockstar gives you a dedicated tool for it: the -scofflineonly launch argument. Just remember to take it off again when you want GTA Online. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar's own rule is that GTA Online is needed to play Story Mode, so check your setup before you rely on it anywhere without internet.
