VoIP providers in the UK split into two camps: UK-based providers that focus on British numbers, home workers and the move away from analogue lines, and global platforms that bring AI, contact centre and CRM features with UK numbers on top. Pick the camp that matches your team, then compare the ten below.
If your business still runs on a traditional landline, the clock's ticking. Voipfone's home page puts it plainly: the Big Switch Off is coming in early 2027, and every phone line needs a plan before then.
The ten providers below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each provider's own website, read as of Oct 2026. If you're still deciding which number to use, my guide to a free business telephone number covers the options.
UK VoIP providers at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
UK specialists and global platforms come at VoIP very differently
Every provider here sells calls over the internet, but they start from very different places. 3CX describes itself as enterprise phone system software you can host yourself or use hosted, Yay.com calls itself an innovative VoIP phone system provider for business, and Gradwell covers phones, broadband and SIP trunks in one place.
Two names are sold mostly through partners rather than direct. Daisy is a channel group, and the Horizon system sits on the Gamma Communications home page, whose line is Good Together.
UK-based provider or global platform with UK numbers?
- UK-based providers. Built around British numbers, home workers and small offices, with help moving off analogue lines.
- Global platforms. Bring contact centre, AI agents and deep CRM integrations, with the UK as one country among many.
- Software you host. A phone system you run on your own server or cloud, bringing your own SIP trunks and numbers.
Questions to ask before you switch your business phones
- Can you keep your number? Check that the provider can transfer your existing number before you sign.
- How many people need a line? Count desk users, mobile users and anyone working from home.
- Which tools must it connect to? CRM and helpdesk integrations save a lot of copying and pasting.
- Do you need a contact centre? Queues, call recording and analytics matter once calls become a team's main job.
- What about out-of-hours calls? Time-of-day routing and an AI receptionist can catch calls you'd otherwise miss.
If you're weighing up an AI receptionist, my guide to AI phone answering for small business walks through the setup.
Do you make a VoIP or cloud phone system for UK businesses? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing a VoIP provider in the UK
Start a free trial or demo with one UK-based provider and one global platform, and route real calls through each for a week. Small teams often find a UK-based provider simpler, while sales and support teams who live in a CRM get more from a global platform. Whichever you choose, move your number last, once you're happy with call quality. Smaller outfits can narrow things down further with a list of VoIP options built for small business to compare.
And remember the number itself is part of your brand. My piece on why your business telephone number still matters explains why.

Frequently asked questions
What is VoIP?
VoIP, or voice over internet protocol, sends phone calls over your internet connection instead of a traditional phone line, so you can take calls on a desk phone, a laptop or a mobile app.
Do I need to switch to VoIP in the UK?
If you're on an analogue line, you'll need a plan. One UK provider's page says the Big Switch Off is coming in early 2027, as of Oct 2026, so it's worth planning the move now.
Can I keep my existing business number?
Usually, yes. Several providers here let you transfer numbers in, so check before you sign and move the number once the new system is working.
Is there a free VoIP phone system?
One phone system here names a free edition and one UK provider offers a free trial, as of Oct 2026. The free plan column shows which, so start there and upgrade when you need more users.
What's a SIP trunk?
A SIP trunk connects a phone system you already own to the phone network over the internet. One provider here says its SIP trunks work with all leading phone system platforms.
