A Praxis app gives future teachers practice questions, explanations and timed tests for the Praxis Core or a Praxis Subject Assessment on their phone. Some cover the Core tests, some focus on elementary education or maths, and a few give you free questions every day. Ten apps follow, in no particular order.
Teacher training is busy, and the Praxis often has to fit around placements, lesson planning and a job. A phone app is a realistic way to keep practising in short sessions, as long as it covers the test you need.
The ten apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the app's own App Store listing, read this week. If you're picturing the job at the end of it, my guide to the elementary school teacher role covers what the work involves.
Praxis apps at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each app's own App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the listing names a free app, a free version, a free tier or free content. Trial only means a time-limited trial or preview. Not stated means the listing I read named neither, even where there's a download button, so check the app's own page before you subscribe.

Start with your state's requirements
Praxis isn't one test. ETS, the organisation that runs it, says each state has its own requirements for certification, and it tells you to check your state's requirements so you register for the right test. That's the single most useful thing to do before you download anything.
ETS also lists free study companions and free resources for the Core tests on its own site, and it offers at-home testing. Use the free official material to understand the format, then add an app for daily practice.

Core tests versus Subject Assessments
The Core tests cover reading, writing and mathematics, and many apps focus there because so many candidates sit them. Subject Assessments test what you'll teach, such as elementary education or early childhood, and fewer apps cover them well.
If your state asks for a Subject Assessment, look for an app that names that exact test on its listing. A general Core app won't prepare you for content questions about teaching reading or a specific subject.
For a different education milestone, there are GED apps.
Five habits that help on the Praxis
- Check your state's required tests and passing scores before you start.
- Use the free official study companion to learn the format.
- Practise a little every day with one app rather than dipping into five.
- Read the explanation for every answer, especially in maths.
- Take at least one timed practice test in conditions like the real thing.

My plain advice on Praxis apps
Check your state's requirements on the official ETS site first, then pick an app that names your exact test. For Core, the apps with free daily questions are a sensible place to start before you commit to a subscription.
Keep your practice short and regular, and save one evening a week for a timed test. Once you're through, my guide to ChatGPT prompts for lesson plans can save you hours in your first teaching year.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best app for the Praxis?
The right app depends on your test. Core takers have the most choice, while Subject Assessment takers should look for an app that names their exact test.
Which Praxis test do I need?
ETS says each state has its own certification requirements, so check your state's requirements before you register.
Are there free Praxis apps?
Some apps here give you free questions every day, and ETS lists free study companions and free Core resources on its site.
Can I take the Praxis at home?
ETS describes at-home testing on its Praxis site, so check whether it's available for your test.
Is Praxis Core hard?
Many candidates find the maths section the hardest part, which is why some apps focus on maths alone.
How long should I study for the Praxis?
There's no set time. Short daily practice over a few weeks, plus timed tests, works better than cramming the night before.
