The best pattern making software depends on whether you sew for yourself, sell a small label or run production. Home sewists and makers often start with free or custom-fit drafting tools; brands and factories need grading, markers and 3D fit checks that cut down physical samples.
Pattern making is where a design becomes something you can cut and sew. Done by hand, it takes paper, rulers, a lot of patience and a toile or two before the fit is right. Software speeds up drafting, makes grading across sizes far less tedious and lets you change a design without starting again.
This list covers open source drafting tools, custom-fit pattern software, production CAD and 3D fashion design. If you're building a career in this, my guide on how to become a fashion designer covers the routes and tools, and for the bigger picture, here's how AI is changing fashion.
Pattern making tools at a glance

Pattern drafting, grading and 3D fashion tools
Browzwear
Best for: Apparel brands and manufacturers that want to develop, fit and approve garments digitally before cutting physical samples.
CLO
Best for: Designers and students who want to draft patterns and see them draped and fitted in 3D before making a single toile.
Gemini CAD Systems
Best for: Growing manufacturers in fashion, upholstery and technical products that want production CAD software from a company now part of Lectra.
Optitex
Best for: Pattern makers in production who need functional grading, production-ready digital patterns and automatic nesting to plan fabric use early.
Richpeace
Best for: Garment and shoe factories, especially those already running the same maker's cutting or sewing machines, that want pattern software from one supplier.
Seamly
Best for: Independent designers, costumiers and makers who want pattern drafting from size charts, made-to-measure data or body scans without a licence.
StyleCAD
Best for: Small manufacturers and pattern makers who want pattern design, grading and marker making in a simpler package, including people moving from Gerber.
Tailornova
Best for: Home sewists, fashion students and small boutiques who want to design garments online and get custom-fitted patterns without drafting by hand.
Tukatech
Best for: Apparel companies and fashion schools that want established 2D pattern making and grading in TUKAcad, with 3D and pattern assets alongside.
Wild Ginger
Best for: Home sewists, costume makers and small businesses who want custom-sized patterns from their own measurements, with fit support from the maker.
From measurements to a cuttable pattern
- Take accurate body measurements or choose a size chart for your target customer.
- Draft a basic block, such as a bodice, skirt or trouser block, from those measurements.
- Develop the block into your design, adding seam allowances, darts, pleats and notches.
- Grade the pattern into other sizes if you're making more than one.
- Check fit with a toile or a 3D simulation, then adjust and lock the final pattern.
Protecting how your design looks
GOV.UK says a design registration lasts 5 years and must be renewed every 5 years to stay protected, up to a maximum of 25 years. The design can include the shape, configuration, decoration, colour or pattern of something.
Registration protects how a finished product looks, not your pattern pieces as working files. If a particular design is central to your label, think about protection before you show it widely, and keep dated versions of your patterns so you can show when you created them.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
2D drafting or 3D design?
2D drafting is still the core skill: precise pieces, seam allowances and grading that a cutter or factory can use. Every serious tool on this list starts there.
3D adds a virtual fitting. You see the pattern sewn onto an avatar, spot pulling or gaping and fix it before cutting fabric. It saves samples for brands, but it's a big learning curve if you only make a few garments for yourself.
Fit problems software helps you catch
- Armholes that pull or gape once the sleeve is set in.
- Seams that don't match in length when two pieces are joined.
- Darts in the wrong place for the measurements you drafted from.
- Grading that distorts proportions at the largest or smallest sizes.
- Pattern pieces that waste fabric because of their layout.
Seam length checks alone save hours. Many drafting tools measure joining seams for you, so you find the mismatch on screen rather than at the sewing machine.
Files your manufacturer can open
If you'll ever send patterns to a factory or a pattern cutting service, ask which file formats they accept before you commit to a tool. Many production systems exchange patterns in common CAD formats, but not every home or online tool exports them.
It's also worth printing a test pattern at home or through a copy shop early on. Check the scale with a test square, because a pattern that prints a few millimetres out on every piece won't fit, however carefully it was drafted.
Do you make pattern making software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My advice on choosing pattern making software
Match the tool to what you make and how many. If you sew for yourself or sell small batches, a free or custom-fit tool will teach you a lot without a big commitment. If you're grading full size ranges or sending work to a factory, choose software whose files your manufacturer can open, because that decides more than any feature.
Whatever you pick, keep making one toile. Software makes drafting faster and fit checks easier, but fabric behaves in ways a screen can't fully show, and a quick test garment still catches the problems that matter.
Frequently asked questions
What is pattern making software?
It's software for drafting sewing patterns on screen, from basic blocks to finished designs, often with grading into sizes and export for printing or cutting.
Is there free pattern making software?
Yes. Some tools are free and open source, while others offer trials or subscriptions. Check each tool's own site for what's included.
Can pattern making software grade sizes?
Most professional tools grade patterns across a size range, and several also create markers that plan how pieces sit on fabric.
Do I need 3D software to make sewing patterns?
No. 2D drafting is enough for most people. 3D helps brands check fit and reduce physical samples.
Can I protect my clothing designs in the UK?
GOV.UK says a registered design can last up to 25 years if you renew it every 5 years. It protects how the product looks.
