Obsidian Themes (2026): 11 With the Most Downloads

The Obsidian themes with the most downloads in Obsidian's official stats range from clean, distraction-free looks to colour schemes borrowed from other apps and code editors. Most come in dark and light versions. Eleven community themes follow in no particular order, with all-time downloads and each theme's last repository push as of Oct 2026.

A theme changes how Obsidian looks: fonts, colours, spacing and how your notes sit on the page. It doesn't add features the way a plugin does. Themes come from Obsidian's official community list, and you can browse and install them inside the app.

The eleven here have the most all-time downloads in Obsidian's own theme stats. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, each described from its own listing. If you're still weighing Obsidian against other note apps, my comparison of Notion vs Obsidian is a good place to start.

How these Obsidian themes were picked

The list comes from Obsidian's official community theme list and its theme download stats, as of Oct 2026. Those stats give all-time downloads but no ratings and no release dates, so the date for each theme is the last push to its GitHub repository. I've called it the last repository push, because that's what the date shows. The free plan column says Not stated because no listing names a plan.

The most downloaded themes aren't all the most recently touched

Minimal leads with 2,731,367 downloads and a last repository push of October 6, 2026. AnuPpuccin, with 1,242,432 downloads, was last pushed on December 1, 2024, Obsidian Nord, with 751,036, on June 10, 2024, and Obsidianite, with 569,510, on February 26, 2024. All as of Oct 2026.

Downloads keep adding up long after a theme stops changing, while Obsidian keeps updating. A last push in 2024 doesn't mean a theme looks wrong today, but it's a reason to try it on a copy of your vault before you switch your main one.

Dark, light or both

Ten of the eleven come in dark and light modes. One is dark only. If you switch with the time of day, or follow your computer's setting, make sure the theme you pick has both, and look at each one, because a theme can look great in one and flat in the other.

Which kind of Obsidian theme for how you write

  • You want nothing on screen but your words: a distraction-free or typewriter-style theme.
  • You like to tweak everything: a theme built for the Style Settings plugin, so you can change it without writing CSS.
  • You read more than you write: a theme designed around readability.
  • You love a colour palette from another app or editor: a theme that borrows it, so your notes match the rest of your setup.
  • You only ever work in the dark: a dark-only theme with a bit of sparkle.

Installing and switching Obsidian themes

  1. Open Settings, then Appearance, then Themes, and browse the community list.
  2. Install a theme and click Use. Only one theme is active at a time.
  3. Try it in light and dark mode before you settle.
  4. Add the Style Settings plugin if the theme supports it, so you can adjust it from a menu.
  5. Keep a CSS snippet for any small change you make, so it survives a switch to another theme.

My plain advice on choosing an Obsidian theme

Pick for the hours you'll spend in it, not the screenshot. Open a long note, a table and a list of tasks in each theme you try, in light and dark, and see which one you stop noticing. That's usually the one to keep.

Then check the last repository push. A theme that's still being pushed to is more likely to keep up as Obsidian changes, and if an older one looks odd, there's a well-kept one on this list that won't.

Frequently asked questions

What are Obsidian themes?

They're community-made designs that change how Obsidian looks, including fonts, colours and spacing. They don't add features, which is what plugins are for.

How do I install an Obsidian theme?

Open Settings, then Appearance, then Themes, browse the community list, install a theme and click Use.

Do Obsidian themes have ratings?

No. Obsidian's official stats show all-time downloads for each theme but no ratings.

What does last repository push mean?

It's the last time the theme's GitHub repository was changed. Obsidian's stats don't carry release dates for themes, so it's the best sign of how recently a theme was worked on.

Can I use more than one Obsidian theme at once?

No, one theme is active at a time. You can add CSS snippets on top to change small things.
