The best legal billing software depends on how your firm works: a time and billing tool suits solo lawyers and small firms, practice management with billing suits growing firms, and e-billing suits in-house legal teams reviewing outside counsel. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Lawyers lose time in two places: hours they forget to record and invoices that sit unsent. Good billing software closes both gaps without adding more admin.
The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from dedicated time and billing apps to full practice systems and e-billing for corporate legal teams. Every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If chasing invoices is the painful part, my script for chasing late invoices with AI may help.

UK firms: the rules your billing must follow
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules require firms to give the client a bill or other written notification before using held client funds to settle it, and to reconcile client accounts at least every five weeks.
If you practise in England and Wales, check the software keeps client ledgers, sends bills before transfers and makes those reconciliations easy. US firms have their own trust accounting rules, so ask vendors which jurisdictions they support.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Time and billing, practice management or e-billing?
Time and billing tools focus on capturing hours and turning them into invoices. Practice management systems add matters, documents, calendars and often legal accounting. E-billing tools sit on the other side, helping in-house teams review and approve bills from outside firms.
Smaller firms often start with time and billing, then move to practice management as they grow.
Questions to ask in a demo
- How easy is it to capture time on a phone between meetings?
- Can you bill in the formats your clients ask for, including billing codes?
- How does it handle client and trust accounts?
- Does it connect to your accounting software?
- Can clients view and settle invoices online?
- Which reports show unbilled work and overdue invoices?
Features that recover lost time
- Mobile time entry. Hours recorded before they're forgotten.
- Batch invoicing. Month-end takes minutes, not days.
- Unbilled reports. You see work that hasn't reached a client.
- Online invoices. Clients can settle without phoning the office.
When to move on from spreadsheets
If time lives in notebooks, invoices are built in a word processor and reconciliations happen in a scramble, a billing system will give you hours back each month and make audits calmer.
Getting lawyers to record time
The best billing system can't bill hours nobody recorded. Make time entry part of the routine, at the end of each call or meeting rather than the end of the week. Mobile apps and timers help, but the habit matters more than the tool. It's also worth showing the team how much unbilled time the reports uncover.
Do you make legal billing software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing legal billing software
Start with time capture. If recording time is fiddly, people won't do it, and no amount of clever invoicing will fix missing hours. Try each tool on your phone in a busy week.
Then check the accounting rules for where you practise, because they're not optional, and make sure the system handles them without workarounds. My guide to online marketing for lawyers covers the other side of growing a firm.
