Best GIF Compressors (2026): 10 Tools for Smaller GIF Files

The best GIF compressor depends on where the file has to end up and how you want to run the tool. Some browser tools aim at a chat, emoji, email or web size target, general image compressors take GIFs among other formats, and command-line encoders suit scripted batches. Pick the destination first, then the way you'll work.

GIF compressors are easy to find and hard to tell apart. Some are a single box on a web page, some are general image tools that happen to take GIFs, and a few are command-line programs you run in a terminal.

This list covers ten GIF compression tools, using only what each maker's own page says, read on 2 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). It's alphabetical and in no particular order. There are no size-saving percentages here: just what each tool is, how you run it and the job it's built for.

Ten GIF compressors and encoders

Compress or Die

Best for: Tweaking the compression by eye, with the result shown next to the original, in a tool its maker says runs entirely in your browser.

ezgif

Best for: Optimizing an animated GIF on a site built around GIF tools, from a GIF maker to resize, crop and effects.

FreeConvert

Best for: Compressing GIF animations online on a site whose menu also lists video to GIF and MP4 to GIF converters.

GIF Compressor (gifcompressor.app)

Best for: Picking a preset upload target, such as Discord, Slack emoji, email or web, before it compresses.

GIF Compressor (gifcompressor.com)

Best for: Batches of GIFs: it compresses several animations at once and saves them one by one or as a ZIP archive.

Gifsicle

Best for: Scripting GIF work in a terminal, from building animations and editing frames to optimising them.

Gifski

Best for: Encoding video frames into GIF animations, with its own controls for resizing and compression levels.

iLoveIMG

Best for: Compressing many animated and non-animated GIFs at once, on a site that also resizes, crops and converts images.

Image Compressor

Best for: Mixed folders of images: it compresses GIF alongside JPEG, PNG, WebP and SVG, and its page says all processing happens in your browser.

Lossy GIF compressor

Best for: Lossy LZW compression for animated GIFs, from an encoder that builds on another tool on this list and runs from the command line.

Where the GIF is going decides the tool

Here's what a searcher wouldn't guess: GIF compression tools differ by where the file has to end up (a Discord or Slack upload, an email, a web page) and by whether they run in a browser or from a command line. GIF Compressor (gifcompressor.app) lets you 'reduce gif size for chat uploads, slack emoji, email, websites, or a custom target'.

At the other end, Gifsicle is a 'command-line tool for creating, editing, and getting information about gif images and animations'. The Lossy GIF compressor page says it 'implements lossy lzw compression', and Compress or Die 'shrinks your (animated) gifs to the smallest file size possible', in its maker's words.

  • A chat or emoji upload: a size target set by the app you're posting to.
  • An email: one tool here has an email preset among its targets.
  • A web page: the same tool has a web preset for blogs, embeds and pages.
  • A scripted batch: a command-line tool run over lots of files.

Browser compressors and upload targets

Four tools here say on their own pages that they run in the browser. One says it 'runs locally in your browser', one says it's 'running entirely in your browser', and two say 'all processing happens in your browser'.

The upload-target site works differently from the rest: you choose a Discord, Slack emoji, email, web or custom target, and its page says it'll fit your GIF under that limit. The other site with the same name, at gifcompressor.com, is a different company's tool, built for compressing a batch of GIFs at once.

Image tools and converters that take GIFs

Not every tool here is a GIF specialist. One general image compressor handles JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and SVG in one place, one image site has a GIF compress page beside resize, crop and convert tools, and one converter site lists its GIF compressor next to video to GIF and MP4 to GIF converters.

The ezgif optimizer sits among a whole set of GIF tools, with a bulk GIF optimizer, a target size compressor and a GIF repair tool listed beside it. If you already use one of these sites for resizing or converting images, check its GIF page before you try a new tool.

Command-line encoders for scripted work

Three tools here run from a command line. One is a tool for building, editing and optimising GIF animations, with a batch mode for changing GIFs in place. Another is an encoder that its page says is based on that tool and implements lossy LZW compression, and you set the strength with a lossy argument.

The third, Gifski, is an encoder that makes GIF animations and lets you resize them and tweak compression levels so they fit within upload file size limits. Its page lists a command-line version for Linux, macOS and Windows, plus desktop apps for Windows and macOS.

Questions before you shrink a GIF

  • Where is the GIF going: Discord, Slack, an email or a web page?
  • Is there a size target I need to hit?
  • Am I compressing one GIF, or a batch of them?
  • Would I rather use a browser tool or a command line?
  • Is the GIF animated or static?
  • Do I also need to resize, crop or edit frames?

Do you make a GIF compressor? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My advice for compressing a GIF

Decide where the GIF's going first. If it has to fit a chat or emoji upload, start with a tool that lets you pick that target. If you've got a folder of mixed images, a general image compressor that takes GIFs saves switching tools. And if you're compressing GIFs as part of a build or a script, the command-line encoders are made for that.

Frequently asked questions

Which GIF compressors run in the browser?

Four tools here say so on their own pages: one says it runs locally in your browser, one that it runs entirely in your browser, and two that all processing happens in your browser. The rest are online tools or command-line programs.

How do I make a GIF small enough for Discord or Slack?

One tool on this list has presets for this: you pick a Discord, Slack emoji, email, web or custom target, and it fits the GIF under that limit. Another site lists a target size compressor among its related GIF tools.

Can I compress several GIFs at once?

Yes. One browser tool compresses several GIF files at once and saves them individually or as a ZIP archive, one image site compresses many animated and non-animated GIFs at once, and another site lists a bulk GIF optimizer. On the command line, one tool has a batch mode.

What is lossy GIF compression?

One encoder here describes it as lossy LZW compression and says it's based on another command-line GIF tool. Its page explains that a normal encoder looks for strings of pixels that match exactly, while the lossy encoder picks strings that are similar enough.

Can I compress a GIF from the command line?

Yes. Three tools on this list run from a command line: a tool for creating, editing and optimising GIFs, a lossy encoder based on it, and an encoder that can resize animations and tweak compression levels.

Do general image compressors work on GIFs?

Some do. One image compressor here takes JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and SVG, and one image tools site has a dedicated page for compressing GIF and animated GIF files.
