Estimate software for contractors helps you build a quote, send it to the customer and turn it into work. It comes in three kinds: quote apps that write the estimate and stop there, job-management software that carries the quote into scheduling and invoices, and estimating tools that build the numbers from plans and takeoffs. Ten follow, in no particular order.
A quote that goes out three days late, or looks like it was written on the back of a van, can lose a job before anyone's compared the numbers. That's the gap estimate software is meant to close, and there's more choice than most contractors expect.
The ten apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Each description comes from the vendor's own website, read on 1 Nov 2026. This page covers general contractor quoting rather than one trade, and nothing here is advice on licences, tax or contract terms.

Buildxact

Estimy
Best for: Contractors who'd rather dictate a quote and let the app structure it into a professional PDF the customer can sign online.
Insta Quotes

Joist
Best for: Contractors who want estimates, invoices and online payments in one simple workflow, with job and client records alongside.

ProWorks
Best for: UK tradespeople who want quotes, the diary, the team, invoices and service reminders kept in one place.
ServiceM8
Best for: Small trade and home service businesses, from sole traders up to 20 staff, who estimate and invoice on site from a phone.
Tradify
Best for: Trades businesses bringing inquiries, estimates, quotes, jobs, staff and invoices together in one job management app.
Quote app, job manager or estimating suite?
The vendors' own titles sort this out quickly. Estimy is 'Voice Quotes for Contractors' and Insta Quotes is a 'Quoting App for Tradies': both get the quote out fast and keep the rest light. Joist calls itself 'Contractor Estimating, Invoicing, & Payment Software', and Buildxact is 'Estimating & Project Management Software' built around takeoffs.
Then come the job managers. Tradify and ProWorks both describe themselves as 'Job Management Software' for trades, Ascora is 'Field Service Software for Contractors', Markate is a 'Service Operations Platform for Field Service Businesses', Knowify is 'Construction management software for trade contractors' and ServiceM8 is 'Smart Field Service Software'.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
So here's the split a contractor wouldn't guess: a quote app writes the estimate and stops, job-management software carries the quote on into scheduling and invoices, and estimating software builds the number from takeoffs. Choose the one that matches how far past the quote you want the software to go.
What goes into a quote customers say yes to
Whatever the app, the quote itself does the selling. A clear quote names the customer and the site, breaks the work into line items for labour and materials, says what's included and what isn't, gives a start window and an expiry date, and makes it easy to accept. Some of these apps add online signing, so the customer can say yes from their phone the same evening.
Templates, takeoffs and voice: three ways to build an estimate
- Templates and item lists. Save your common jobs and materials once, then build each quote from them. It's the fastest route for repeat work like call-outs and small installs.
- Takeoffs from plans. Estimating software measures quantities from drawings, so bigger builds start from the plans rather than a guess. It takes longer to learn but suits renovation and new-build work.
- Voice and photo quoting. Newer apps let you describe the job or snap a photo and then draft line items for you to check. Always review the draft before it goes out, because you're the one standing behind the number.

Questions to ask before you switch
- Do you only need quotes, or quotes, scheduling and invoices together?
- Does it work on the phone you carry on site, and what happens when there's no signal?
- Can customers accept the quote online, and does it turn into a job or an invoice automatically?
- Does it sync with your accounting software, such as QuickBooks or Xero?
- Is it set up for the country you work in and the way your trade quotes?
- Can you bring your existing customer list and item library across?

My plain advice on choosing contractor estimate software
Be honest about where the paperwork hurts. If it's only the quote, a quote app will get estimates out the same day without forcing a whole new system on you. If jobs slip between the quote, the diary and the invoice, job-management software is the bigger fix. If you're estimating larger builds from plans, an estimating suite with takeoffs is the one to look at. Try any of them with one real job before you move everything over. Once the job is won, construction accounting software is the next system to compare.
If you're also weighing up the bigger field service platforms, my list of Jobber alternatives covers that end.

Frequently asked questions
What is estimate software for contractors?
It's software for building and sending job quotes. Some apps stop at the quote, while others carry it through to scheduling, invoicing and job tracking.
What's the difference between an estimate and a quote?
People often use the words for the same thing. In many trades an estimate is an approximate number and a quote is a firm offer, so make it clear on the document which one you're sending.
Can I write estimates on my phone?
Yes. Most of these apps run on a phone or tablet, so you can build and send a quote from the job site, and some let customers sign online.
Do I need takeoff software?
Only if you estimate from drawings. Takeoff tools measure quantities from plans, which helps on renovations and new builds. For call-outs and small jobs, templates and saved item lists are usually quicker.
Can AI write my quotes?
Some apps now draft line items from a voice note, photo or description. They save typing, but you still need to check every line before the quote goes to a customer.
Will estimate software work with my accounting software?
Many apps do, often with QuickBooks or Xero. Check the vendor's own integrations page for the exact package you use.
