An email tracker Chrome extension tells you when someone opens an email you sent from Gmail, and some also count link clicks. Most are plain trackers, one sits inside a Gmail CRM, and one also blocks the trackers in emails you receive. Eight are compared below with their store numbers.
Knowing whether a proposal's been opened changes how you follow up. Chase too soon and you look pushy, chase too late and the moment's gone, and a tracker in Gmail takes the guessing out of it.
The eight below are listed alphabetically, in no particular order, and everything comes from their Chrome Web Store listings. For more on running email campaigns from Gmail itself, see my guide to using Gmail for effective email campaigns.
How we chose these email trackers
Every tool here is a Chrome extension whose listing says it tracks email opens. From each Chrome Web Store listing we noted the publisher, users, rating and how many ratings it has, and the last updated date, as of Oct 2026. No ranking was applied. The free plan column says Yes only where the listing's own text says there's free tracking, and Not stated means it doesn't say.

Eight email trackers that work inside Gmail
cloudHQ Email Tracker
Best for: Real-time alerts when someone opens your email, from cloudHQ LLC, a maker with a smaller user base on this listing.
Email Tracker and Tracking Detector
Best for: Tracking your own emails while blocking trackers in the emails you receive, across Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail and more.
GoEmailTracker
Best for: Google Workspace users who want open and click tracking with an AI email writer built into the same extension.
Mailtrack
Best for: Gmail users who want the most installed tracker in this list, from Mailsuite, with GDPR and Google audit claims on its listing.
MailTracker
Best for: Seeing how many times each email gets opened, with a free plan its listing says covers 20 tracked emails.
SONAR Email Tracker for Gmail
Best for: Keeping things simple in Gmail, from a tiny listing that shows no update since September 27, 2024.
Streak
Best for: People who already run deals from their inbox, from a maker whose wider product is a CRM that lives inside Gmail.
Unlimited Email Tracker
Best for: Anyone who wants open and link click statistics in Gmail, from Snovio inc, and it carries the highest rating in this group.
Plain tracker, inbox CRM or tracker blocker
Most of these do one job: they add a small tracking image or tracked links to the emails you send, then tell you when they're opened or clicked. One comes from a maker whose wider product is a CRM inside Gmail, so you'd pick it if you already manage deals from your inbox.
And one works both ways. Alongside tracking your own emails, its listing says it blocks trackers in the emails you receive, across Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail and more. It's a handy reminder that the people you email can use the same trick in reverse.
Store numbers for each tracker, as of Oct 2026
These come from the Chrome Web Store and change daily.

The privacy line most email trackers don't show
Here's what I'd want to know before giving any extension access to my inbox. Only two of these eight listings carry the line saying the developer will not collect or use your data. The other six don't show it in their listing text, and that includes the most installed tracker in the group.
That doesn't prove anything bad is happening, but an email tracker reads what you send and who you send it to, so open the Privacy practices box on the listing and read it before you click install. One more thing to watch: the oldest listing here shows no update since September 27, 2024.
Pick a tracker by the emails you send
- Occasional proposals and quotes: pick a plain open tracker with a large user base and a recent update.
- Outreach where clicks matter: pick one that reports link clicks as well as opens.
- You already run deals from Gmail: pick the tracker that sits inside a Gmail CRM, so tracking and deals live together.
- You use Outlook or Yahoo Mail as well: pick one whose listing names those inboxes, not just Gmail.
- You'd like to block other people's trackers: pick the one that also detects and blocks trackers in mail you receive.
- You only track a few emails: a free plan with a small tracked email allowance may be all you need.
Recipients can switch off the images that make tracking work, and our guide to ad blockers that run in Chrome shows how that same idea gets applied to ads.
Use open tracking with care
- Treat an open as a hint, not proof that anyone read a word.
- Don't fire off a follow-up the second an alert pops up. Give people a day, then reply with something useful.
- Think about whether the people you email would expect to be tracked, especially for personal messages.

My plain advice on email tracking
Start with a plain tracker from a maker that updates often, read its privacy box, and only move to a CRM-style tool if you're already managing deals in your inbox. The alert is a nudge to follow up well, so spend the time you save on writing a better reply.
If you'd rather keep your inbox lean, my guide to improving productivity in Gmail without extra apps pairs nicely with a tracker.

Frequently asked questions
How does an email tracker Chrome extension work?
It adds tracking to the emails you send from Gmail and tells you when they're opened, and some also count link clicks. You'll see the alerts inside Gmail or the extension.
Are email tracker extensions free?
Two of the eight listings here say there's free tracking, one of them with a set allowance of tracked emails. The rest don't say either way, so check the free plan column.
Can I tell if someone is tracking my emails?
One extension here says on its listing that it detects and blocks trackers in the emails you receive, as well as tracking your own.
Is open tracking always accurate?
Treat an open as a hint rather than proof someone read the email, and give people a day before you follow up.
Is it safe to give an email tracker access to Gmail?
Read the Privacy practices box first. Only two of the eight listings here show the line saying the developer will not collect or use your data.
