A driving theory test app gives you the DVSA revision questions, mock tests and hazard perception clips on your phone, so you can revise in short bursts. In Great Britain you need 43 out of 50 on the questions and 44 out of 75 on hazard perception. Ten apps follow, in no particular order.
Theory revision rarely fails for lack of material. It fails because learners cram the questions, pass the mocks, then lose marks on hazard perception, where timing matters as much as knowledge.
The apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the provider's own App Store listing, read this week. If you like a structured revision routine, my ChatGPT prompts for studying and revision can turn a topic you keep getting wrong into a quick quiz.
Driving theory test apps at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each provider's own App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version, a free tier of questions, free membership or free listing. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a download button or a button inviting you to start, so check the provider's own page before you sign up.

What GOV.UK says about the two parts of the test
GOV.UK sets out the car theory test in two parts, and you must pass both. You have 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions and need 43 to pass. Three of those questions are about a short, silent video clip of a normal driving situation.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The hazard perception part uses 14 video clips. Every clip has at least one developing hazard and one clip has 2. You score points for spotting a developing hazard as soon as it starts to happen, and you need 44 out of 75. Once you pass, your certificate number lasts for 2 years, so you'll need to pass your practical test in that time.
Why hazard perception catches people out
A developing hazard is something that would make you change speed or direction, like a pedestrian stepping towards the kerb. A parked car doing nothing isn't one. GOV.UK says you can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard and you won't lose points for a wrong click, but you'll score nothing on a clip if you click continuously or in a pattern. You also get one attempt at each clip.
That's why the number of hazard clips in an app matters more than the number of questions. Every app here mentions DVSA material in its listing, but the amount of hazard practice varies a lot, so practise clicking at the moment a hazard starts to develop.
A two-week revision plan that works
- Days 1 to 3: read one topic a day in the app and answer its questions.
- Days 4 to 7: switch to mixed mock tests and note the topics you miss.
- Days 8 to 10: do ten hazard clips a day and watch how your timing improves.
- Days 11 to 13: alternate full mocks with hazard clips in one sitting.
- Day 14: one calm mock, then rest before the test.
What to check before you download
- DVSA licensed content. Look for wording that the questions and clips are licensed by the DVSA.
- Hazard clip count. More clips mean more practice at timing your clicks.
- Offline use. Handy if you revise on buses, trains or in a car park before a lesson.
- Your region. Northern Ireland learners should check the app covers their test.

My plain advice on driving theory test apps
Pick one app with plenty of hazard clips and stick with it, rather than hopping between five. Pass three full mocks in a row with room to spare before you book, and give hazard perception as much time as the questions.
