Cloud Server Hosting (2026): 10 Providers Compared

Cloud server hosting means renting virtual servers on demand and scaling them up or down as you go. The real choice is who runs what: a raw virtual machine you manage yourself, a managed layer over someone else's cloud, or a provider picked for where your data sits. Ten providers follow, in no particular order.

Search for cloud servers and you'll get the same handful of names whatever you need. The trouble is that a developer spinning up a test machine, an agency hosting client sites and a company with data rules are buying very different things.

So this list is organised around who does the work and where the data lives, rather than server specs. The ten providers are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each provider's own website, read as of Oct 2026.

Ten places to rent a cloud server

Civo

Best for: Teams that need sovereign, secure cloud environments, public or private, from a provider built to simplify the cloud.

Cloudways

Best for: Agencies and site owners who want fully managed WordPress and Node.js hosting, with client billing and reporting built in.

Contabo

Best for: Self-managers who want cloud VPS with auto backup, private networking, custom images, cloud-init and its own API and CLI.

Exoscale

Best for: European businesses wanting SSD-backed virtual machines billed by the second, managed Kubernetes and storage across European zones.

Hetzner Cloud

Best for: Developers and teams who want simple cloud instances from a provider listing Made in Germany and GDPR-compliant on its cloud page.

IONOS Cloud

Best for: Small businesses that want fully virtualised private servers, dedicated hosting and cloud alongside domains and email from one company.

Kamatera

Best for: Growing companies that start with a small cloud server and scale up and out, with an option for its experts to manage the cloud.

OVHcloud

Best for: Organisations wanting public cloud, hosted private cloud and SecNumCloud-qualified options from one European provider.

Rackspace

Best for: Enterprises in regulated or mission-critical sectors that want engineers to operate the infrastructure, data layer and software integration.

UpCloud

Best for: SMBs wanting high-performance Linux or Windows cloud servers with full control, plus private cloud and managed Kubernetes as they grow.

Raw machine, managed layer or data that stays put

Here's how the providers describe themselves on their own pages. Kamatera's title is 'Fast, Flexible Cloud Solutions | VMs, VPS, IaaS', and Hetzner's cloud page says 'Cloud-hosting provider for developers & teams'. UpCloud calls itself a 'Global Cloud Platform', and IONOS Cloud says 'No compromise cloud performance'.

Cloudways is a different animal: it's a 'Managed Cloud Hosting Platform', a managed layer you run your sites on. Then there are providers chosen for where the data sits or who operates it. Civo calls itself a 'Sovereign Cloud', Exoscale is a 'European cloud provider', and Rackspace says 'Where Enterprise AI runs'.

That's the split worth knowing before you compare specs. You rent a raw virtual machine and run it, you rent a managed layer over cloud infrastructure, or you choose a provider for where its data lives and who looks after it. The specs matter far less than which of those three jobs you're hiring for.

Cloud server or VPS: where the line falls

The words overlap and plenty of providers use both. In general, a VPS is a fixed slice of a server you rent month to month, while a cloud server is built to be created, resized and removed on demand, often by API, with networking, storage and Kubernetes around it. If all you need is one small server that never changes, the difference is mostly a label. If you expect to add machines, move regions or automate deployments, cloud features start to matter.

Three questions that decide it

  1. Who manages the server? With a raw virtual machine you patch, secure and back it up. A managed layer handles that for you, in exchange for some control.
  2. Where must the data live? If customers or regulators care about the country or jurisdiction, a European or sovereign provider narrows the field fast.
  3. How will it grow? Check for an API, Kubernetes, private networking and block storage before you need them, not after.

What first-time cloud renters tend to miss

  • Backups. They aren't always on by default, so check whether snapshots or backups are included or an add-on.
  • Firewalls. A new cloud server is on the internet the moment it boots, so lock it down from the first minute.
  • Region. Put the server close to your users, because distance shows up as slower pages.
  • Outbound data. Transfer rules vary by provider, so read the provider's own page before you plan a busy app.
  • What managed means. A managed WordPress platform looks after the stack it supports, not everything you might install.

If you're hosting a blog or a small business site, my guide on choosing a hosting provider may suit you better than a raw cloud server, and my comparison of AWS CloudFront and BunnyCDN covers the CDN that usually sits in front of one.

My plain advice on renting cloud servers

Be honest about who'll look after the server. If you've got a developer who's happy with SSH, firewalls and updates, a raw cloud provider gives you the most control and the widest choice of regions. If you haven't, a managed layer is the safer bet, because the server is the easy part and keeping it secure is the job. And if your customers ask where their data is stored, start with the European or sovereign providers and work out from there.

Frequently asked questions

What is cloud server hosting?

It's renting virtual servers that run on a provider's infrastructure and can be created, resized or removed on demand, usually from a dashboard or API.

Is a cloud server the same as a VPS?

They overlap. A VPS is usually a fixed virtual server, while cloud servers are designed to scale and come with extra services such as block storage, load balancers and Kubernetes.

What is managed cloud hosting?

It's a layer on top of cloud infrastructure where the provider handles server setup, updates and security, so you deploy your site or app without running the server yourself.

What does sovereign cloud mean?

It describes cloud services designed to keep data and operations within a particular jurisdiction and under local control. Ask each provider exactly which countries and rules it covers.

Do I need technical skills to run a cloud server?

For a raw virtual machine, yes: you'll manage the operating system, security and backups. A managed platform takes most of that off your hands.

Where should my cloud server be located?

Close to most of your users for speed, and in the right jurisdiction if your customers or regulators care where data is stored.
