CDN Providers (2026): 10 Content Delivery Networks Compared

A CDN provider caches your website's files, and often its dynamic content and video, on servers around the world, so visitors load pages from a location near them instead of your origin server. That makes sites faster and takes load off your hosting. Ten providers follow in no particular order.

Every visitor who loads your site from the other side of the world waits for data to cross oceans. A content delivery network fixes that by keeping copies close to visitors, and most now add security, edge code and video delivery on top.

The ten providers below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each provider's own website, read as of Oct 2026. If images are your main load, my guide to image CDNs covers resizing and format conversion in more depth.

Content delivery networks at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means the page names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

You don't have to rip out your CDN to try another

Here's the detail I'd want every site owner to know. CacheFly's own page offers to add a lane alongside your existing CDN, with no migration required and no risk to production traffic. That's multi-CDN in plain terms: you can test a second provider on part of your traffic before you commit, instead of betting the whole site on one switch.

Setup styles differ too. Cloudflare's page explains it works as a reverse proxy, so you don't change your URLs, while traditional CDNs ask you to point assets at a new hostname. Ask each provider which model it uses before you plan the move.

Hyperscaler CDN or independent provider?

  • Cloud platform CDNs. If your site runs on one cloud, its CDN plugs into the rest of that account. Google, for example, adds a separate Media CDN that uses YouTube's infrastructure for video.
  • Independent CDNs. Specialists that often set up in minutes and focus on delivery, streaming or a region. CDN77 says it's delivered 430 PB of video daily.
  • Edge platforms. CDNs that also run your code, security rules and image processing at the edge.

What to check before you switch CDN

  • Coverage. Are there locations near your real visitors, not just the biggest cities?
  • Content type. Is it static files, dynamic pages, APIs or video? Some providers specialise.
  • Cache control. Can you purge instantly and set rules per path?
  • Security. Is DDoS protection and a web application firewall included, or a separate product?
  • Setup. Reverse proxy, new hostname or a lane next to your current CDN?

If attacks are your bigger worry, my guide to DDoS protection services goes deeper on that side.

My plain advice on choosing a CDN provider

Start with where your visitors and your origin are. If you're on one cloud, test its own CDN first. If you want the quickest win for a typical website, a reverse proxy CDN or an independent with a fast setup gets you live in an afternoon. For video or big launch days, talk to a specialist and test it as a second lane before you move everything.

If you're weighing up one well-known provider in particular, my roundup of Cloudflare alternatives compares the options side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CDN provider?

It's a company that runs servers around the world to cache and deliver your website's content from locations close to each visitor, so pages load faster.

Do small websites need a CDN?

It helps most when visitors are spread across countries or pages are heavy with images and video. Many providers set up in minutes, so it's easy to test.

Can I use two CDNs at once?

Yes. Multi-CDN setups split traffic between providers, and one provider here offers to run alongside your existing CDN with no migration.

Is there a free CDN?

Some providers name a free trial on their own pages, shown in the free plan column. Check the terms on each provider's own site.

What's the difference between a CDN and an image CDN?

A CDN delivers all kinds of content. An image CDN also resizes, compresses and converts images on the fly. Some general CDNs include image processing too.
