An AI voicemail greeting generator turns a short typed script into a recorded greeting read by a natural-sounding AI voice. You pick a voice and language, download the audio file and upload it to your phone system. Choose by languages, voice quality and whether you also want a business phone line. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
A voicemail greeting is often the first thing a new customer hears from your business. A rushed recording made in a noisy kitchen tells them something, and so does a calm, clear message that tells them exactly what happens next.
The ten generators below range from free text-to-speech pages to business phone systems with a greeting tool built in. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you'd rather have calls answered than sent to voicemail, my guide to an AI phone receptionist for a small business covers that option.
AI voicemail greeting generators at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The FCC line between a greeting and a robocall
The Federal Communications Commission unanimously adopted a Declaratory Ruling that recognises calls made with AI-generated voices as 'artificial' under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. That's the US law that controls robocalls and prerecorded messages.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
A greeting that plays when someone calls you is a different thing from a call you place to them. Use an AI voice on your own voicemail as much as you like. If you're tempted to use the same voice for outbound reminders or sales calls, talk to someone who knows the consent rules first.
How to write a greeting people listen to
- Say your business name in the first sentence.
- Tell callers when they'll hear back, such as within one working day.
- Give one alternative, like a website address or a text number.
- Keep it under about 20 seconds, so nobody hangs up.
- Type numbers and times the way you want them spoken, then play it back.
Free tool or phone system greeting
A free generator suits a sole trader who already has a mobile number and just wants a better message. You download the file, upload it to your carrier's voicemail settings and you're done.
If you're setting up a new business line, a phone system with a greeting tool saves a step, because the greeting sits in the same place as your call routing, opening hours and holiday messages. Record a separate out-of-hours version while you're there.
Signs your greeting needs redoing
- Callers ask if they've got the right number. Say your business name first.
- People hang up before the beep. Make it shorter.
- Opening hours have changed. Update the script.
- The voice sounds robotic on a phone line. Try another voice.
Do you make an AI voicemail greeting generator? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on voicemail greetings
Write the script before you open any tool. Read it aloud once, cut anything a caller doesn't need, then try two or three voices and pick the one that sounds most like your business on a good day.
Call your own number from another phone after you upload it. If the greeting is too quiet, too fast or cut off, you'll hear it straight away, and so would your customers. Then save the script, so updating it for holidays takes a minute. My notes on AI phone answering for small businesses cover what happens when you'd rather nobody reached voicemail at all.
Frequently asked questions
What should a business voicemail greeting say?
Your business name, an apology for missing the call, when the caller will hear back and one other way to reach you.
Can I use an AI voice for my voicemail greeting?
Yes. Many tools turn a typed script into a recorded greeting you can download and upload to your phone system.
Are AI voices allowed in outbound calls?
The FCC treats calls made with AI-generated voices as artificial under the TCPA, so consent rules apply to outbound calls.
What file format do phone systems accept?
Common audio files such as MP3 usually work. Check your phone system's upload settings before you download.
How long should a voicemail greeting be?
Short. Around 15 to 20 seconds is enough to say who you are and what happens next.
Do I need a separate holiday greeting?
Yes. A short holiday or out-of-office version stops callers expecting an answer on a day you're closed.
