Best AI Tools for Nonprofits (2026): 10 Compared

The best AI tools for nonprofits help small teams raise more with the hours they have: finding grants, drafting proposals, spotting which donors to contact and personalising online giving. Several are built only for the charity sector. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Nonprofit teams are usually doing three jobs each. The person writing the grant is also updating the donor database and planning the spring appeal.

That's where AI helps most. The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If grant writing is the job you'd hand over first, my guide to AI tools for writing grant applications goes deeper on that one task.

Nonprofit AI tools compared

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account or a free way to start. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Why an AI-written appeal is still direct marketing

The Information Commissioner's Office explains that PECR restrict unsolicited marketing by phone, fax, email, text or other electronic message. Its guidance says direct marketing covers a charity campaigning for support or funds, and that you will often need specific consent to send unsolicited direct marketing.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

AI makes it easy to write a hundred personalised appeals in an afternoon. It doesn't change who you're allowed to send them to. In the UK, check consent before the send button, and keep the record of where each supporter's permission came from.

Grant tools, donor tools or giving tools?

Grant tools find funders and draft proposals. They save the most time for organisations that live on trusts, foundations and government funding.

Donor tools score and research the people already on your database, so you call the right supporter at the right moment instead of working down the list alphabetically.

Giving tools sit on the donation page itself, shaping the ask and the follow-up for each visitor. They matter most if a big share of your income arrives online.

What to ask before a charity adopts an AI tool

  1. Where is donor data stored, and who can see it?
  2. Can you edit every AI draft before it goes out?
  3. Does it connect to the CRM you already use?
  4. Does the vendor offer terms for charities?
  5. Who on the team will check the facts in each proposal?
  6. Can trustees see how the tool is being used?

Signs your fundraising team needs more hands

  • Grant deadlines slip past. Track them in one system.
  • Every appeal reads the same. Personalise the ask.
  • Major donors hear from you once a year. Let data prompt you.
  • Proposals start from a blank page. Draft from past wins.

My advice for nonprofits starting with AI

Start with the grant pipeline. It's repetitive, deadline-driven and easy to check, and a good AI draft can turn a two-day application into an afternoon of editing. Keep a human on facts, outcome numbers and the final read, every time.

Once the grant side is working, look at your donor data. My round-up of the best CRM for nonprofits is a good place to check the system the AI will sit on.

Frequently asked questions

How can nonprofits use AI?

Common uses are drafting grant proposals, researching funders, scoring donors, personalising appeals and online giving, and handling admin such as thank-you letters and reports.

Is AI safe for donor data?

It can be, if the vendor's security and data terms are clear. Check where data is stored and who can access it before you connect your donor database.

Can AI write grant applications?

It can draft them, often quickly. Funders still expect accurate facts and a clear voice, so edit every draft and check each claim yourself.

Do UK charities need consent to email supporters?

Often, yes. The ICO says direct marketing covers a charity campaigning for support or funds, and you'll often need specific consent for unsolicited electronic marketing.

Are there free AI tools for nonprofits?

Some tools name a free plan or a free way to start, and others offer trials. The free plan column above shows what each site said when I checked.

Will AI replace fundraisers?

No. It takes on drafting and research, but relationships with donors and funders still depend on people.
