The best AI SEO agents go beyond reporting problems: they plan content, suggest or make on-site changes and track how often you show up in Google and AI search answers. Some run almost on autopilot, while others wait for you to approve each change. Ten options follow in no particular order.
SEO has always had a to-do list problem. You know what needs doing, from fixing titles to writing the article your customers keep searching for, but there's never quite time.
The ten agents below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you'd rather start with tools you drive yourself, my roundup of AI SEO tools covers those.

Where Google draws the line on automated pages
This is the most important thing to understand before you let any agent publish. Google Search Central's spam policies define scaled content abuse as generating many pages for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings rather than helping users.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One of Google's own examples is using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users. An agent that churns out dozens of thin articles can do your site real harm, so the safest setups are the ones where a person approves what goes live.
Autopilot agents versus approval-first agents
Some agents promise growth on autopilot: they research, write and publish with very little input. Others diagnose issues, propose fixes and wait for you to say yes. A third group focuses on visibility in AI search answers rather than on your pages.
If your website is important to your business, approval-first is the calmer choice. You keep the speed of an agent without handing over the keys.
Questions to ask before you hand SEO to an agent
- Does it publish on its own, or wait for my approval?
- Can it read my Search Console data?
- Does it explain why it recommends each change?
- Can I undo changes it makes to my site?
- Does it track AI search answers as well as Google rankings?
- Will it write in my brand voice?
Signs an SEO agent is doing more harm than good
- It publishes pages nobody asked for. Switch to approvals.
- Articles all sound alike. Add real expertise and examples.
- You can't see what it changed. Demand a change log.
- Rankings drop after it starts. Pause and review its work.

My plain advice on choosing an AI SEO agent
Use an agent to find opportunities and draft the work, but keep a human hand on the publish button. You'll move faster than doing everything yourself, and you won't wake up to fifty pages you'd never have written.
Keep an eye on AI search too, because some customers now ask an assistant before they ever search. My guide on appearing in Google AI Overviews explains what those answers tend to pick up.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI SEO agent?
An AI SEO agent is software that researches, plans and sometimes carries out SEO work, such as on-page changes and content, with less manual effort.
Are there free AI SEO agents?
Some offer trials, and at least one has an open source audit engine. The free plan column above shows what each tool's own site says.
Can an AI SEO agent get my site penalised?
It can if it mass-produces low-value pages. Google's spam policies list generating many pages with generative AI without adding value as scaled content abuse.
Should an AI agent publish content on its own?
It's safer to approve every page yourself, so only helpful, accurate content goes live.
Do AI SEO agents track ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
Several agents in this list track or work on visibility in AI search answers as well as Google rankings.
Can an AI SEO agent replace an SEO consultant?
It can take on routine tasks, but strategy, judgement and knowing your customers still need a person.
